Rodriguez breaks program assist record in 71-62 loss at Lawrence Tech

SOUTHFIELD, Mich.  – A 32-year-old record was broken on Wednesday evening in Southfield as redshirt senior Christian Rodriguez recorded 10 assists tonight to pass Scott O'Day (1985-89) for the all-time Golden Eagle program record. Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles however, they were stifled offensively as they fell 71-62 to Lawrence Tech for their first WHAC loss. Cornerstone is now 6-2, 2-1 WHAC on the year as they travel to Siena Heights on Saturday, November 20 for a 3 p.m. tip with the Saints.  

What you need to know? 
  • Trent Summerfield highlighted the first nine minutes of play with four three's that put CU on top 20-18. 
  • After falling behind 25-20, Carter Nyp, Jack Joldersma, and Cory Ainsworth all found buckets including a dunk from Joldersma that made it 26-25. 
  • Christian Rodriguez hit a jumper to end the first half and give CU the 35-32 advantage at the break. Rodriguez sat two assists away from the record at halftime with six points and six assists. 
  • Lawrence Tech hit two threes to begin the second half to regain the 38-35 advantage. 
  • The dagger came in the middle of the second half, as LTU went on an 11-0 run and held Cornerstone at 40, as they took a 51-40 lead. 
  • With 9:34 to play, Carter Nyp hit a three that gave Christian Rodriguez his eighth assist of the day and 577th in his career to break Scott O'Day's 32-year-old Cornerstone program record. The three by Nyp also cut the deficit to three at 55-52. 
  • Cornerstone was unable to get closer than three however in the final 10 minutes as the Blue Devils had an answer for everything Cornerstone did. 
  • With 28 seconds to play LTU's Blake Lund hit a three that put the Blue Devils up nine and sealed the game 71-62. Cornerstone falls to 6-2 with the loss and 2-1 in WHAC play. 
 
By the Numbers 
16/10 – Christian Rodriguez recorded his second double-double of the 2021-22 season with 16 points and 10 assists.
36.6% - Cornerstone was held to just 36.6% from the field in the loss. 
17 – Carter Nyp led the way with 17 points while CU had four players score in double-figures.

Cornerstone continues the WHAC road trip at Siena Heights on Saturday, November 20 at 3 p.m.
