Third quarter dooms Women’s Basketball in 75-66 loss vs. (25) Taylor

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –  The Golden Eagles held the lead at the half, but were outscored 25-11 in the third as they fall 75-66 on Tuesday evening to (25) Taylor University. Cornerstone is now 0-3 on the year with all three losses to Crossroads League teams. CU will play another Crossroads League foe at home on Saturday vs. Bethel at 11 a.m. 
 
Game Flow:
  • Both teams got off to a flying start each hitting the three ball, as Kennedy Helderop scored eight of the Golden Eagle first 10 points with two three's and a floater to give CU a 10-9 lead. 
  • The offenses slowed down to end the first quarter. Taylor led Cornerstone 17-16 at the first intermission. 
  • Once again the offenses got hot to start the second quarter as Taylor hit their first three shots and Cornerstone their first two on a Kaycee Sluiter jumper and Mackenzie Stien layup. 
  • Jaylee long hit a layup with 5:10 to play in the second that tied the game at 25. Long later hit a three that gave Cornerstone the lead 30-29. 
  • An Ellen Kresge three increased the CU lead to four at the half, 35-31. 
  • Mackenzie Stien recorded an and-one right out of the gate in the third quarter to increase the Cornerstone lead to its largest at seven, 38-31. 
  • The Trojans responded with a 9-1 run to regain the lead 40-39 with 6:35 to play in the third. 
  • Taylor continued to dominate the third quarter, outscoring CU 25-11 in the period to take their largest lead of 10 at 56-46. 
  • In the fourth, Kayla Kirtley hit an and-one for the Trojans that increased the lead to 11 at 59-48. 
  • With 4:22 to play Mackenzie Stien got inside and hit a layup to cut the deficit back to single digits at 66-57. 
  • Cornerstone was unable to come back though as they fell 75-66 vs. Taylor and dropped to 0-3 on the year. 
 
By the numbers:
56-36 – Cornerstone was outscored 56 to 36 in the paint. 
21.05% - CU shot just 21.05% in the second half after shooting over 40% in the first half. 
33 – Mackenzie Stien (18) and Kennedy Helderop (15) combined for half of the Golden Eagle points today.

Cornerstone continues their tour of the Crossroads League vs. Bethel at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 6.
