GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – With .3 seconds to play in the game, Bethel could not get off the game-tying shot in time as Cornerstone walked away with a thrilling 82-80 win. Cornerstone earned their first win of the season, overcoming the stifling full-court press and lineup changes used by the Pilots.
Ellen Kresge was a constant force on both ends of the court, scoring 21 points and making multiple defensive plays to lead the Golden Eagles. CU moves to 1-3 on the season. They open conference play this week.
Game Flow:
- Bethel started the game on a 5-0 run, with Nyla Asad scoring four of the first five points of this game.
- Not to be deterred, Cornerstone fought back, taking an early 10-8 lead after a Stephanie Ainsworth layup.
- An Olivia Kubik jump shout put the Golden Eagles up 18-14 with 1:33 remaining in the first quarter.
- After a Kaycee Sluiter layup, Cornerstone went up 20-16, taking a four-point lead into the first intermission.
- Down 30-32, Kennedy Helderop drilled a three. Bethel responded with a three of their own, then Kaycee Sluiter hit a layup to even the game at 35-35 with 3:52 remaining in the first half.
- Up 43-38, Abby Williams hit a layup to cut the CU lead to three, with the Golden Eagles taking a 43-40 lead into the break.
- The third quarter went back-and-forth to start, but CU turned up the heat when Ellen Kresge hit a layup, two free throws, and a three, to put the Golden Eagles up 13 points, 61-48, with 2:10 to go in the third quarter.
- With 1:10 to go in the third, CU took their largest lead of the night after a Parrish Hudson free throw.
- Then, with 6 seconds to play, Stephanie Ainsworth hit two free throws to take a 66-53 win into the final break.
- Bethel cut the CU lead to seven points early in the fourth quarter, but Ellen Kresge kept the Pilots at bay with a clutch three with 8:37 to play.
- Bethel slowly chipped away at the CU lead, eventually tying the game on a pair of Kallie McElroy free throws, 69-69, with 5:35 to play.
- Continued back-and-forth play kept the game close, but the Golden Eagles took a five-point lead with 1:33 to play on a Maddison Fulks layup.
- With CU up 81-80 with five second to play, Kennedy Helderop hit a free throw to give Cornerstone an 82-80 lead.
- Chaos ensued when Helderop missed a free throw and Bethel called a timeout with .7 seconds to play. On the inbound, the ball ricocheted off a few players, with Bethel having one more inbound attempt with .3 seconds to play.
- On the final inbound, Bethel caught the ball, took a step, and made a layup, but the refs called the game before the shot went off as Cornerstone won the game 82-80.
