Women’s Volleyball swept by (9) Midland in NAIA National Tournament Opening Round

FREMONT, Neb. – Cornerstone traveled to Fremont, Nebraska with a tough task on hand in the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round at (9) Midland, and they fell in straight sets 25-13, 25-10, 25-16. Cornerstone's season comes to an end at 24-15. Head Coach Megan Lenhart and the young CU roster will now hit the offseason and begin preparing for the 2022 year. 

Game Recap: Cornerstone – 0 Midland – 3 (13-25, 10-25, 16-25)
  • Kaylee Dykema opened the Golden Eagles national's campaign with the first kill of the match in the team's first ever meeting with Midland University. 
  • Some early errors then allowed CU to go on top 5-3. 
  • Midland started to get in rhythm and responded with a 5-0 run with back-to-back kills from Abbey Ringler to go on top 9-5. 
  • A Warrior 7-0 run later in the set allowed them to double up CU 20-10. 
  • Rylie Walters, Aubrey Lenz, and Olivia Keelean all recorded kills down the stretch of set one, but it was too late as CU fell 25-13. 
  • In set two, Midland saw their serve working early, getting out to a quick 6-2 advantage. 
  • Kaylee Dykema recorded a big solo block in the middle of set two to cut the deficit to five at 12-7. 
  • Midland scored nine of the last 11 points to win set two 25-10. 
  • Cornerstone came out strong in set three as an Olivia Keelean kill made it 3-1 early. 
  • Despite the Golden Eagles best efforts to keep it close, Midland refused to let the ball hit the floor and recorded a 6-1 run to go on top 10-5. 
  • Kaylee Dykema and Rylie Walters combined for a block to cut the deficit to 10-7. 
  • Midland again recorded a big run of 7-1 later in the set and eventually would take set three and the match on a kill from Taliyah Flores, 25-16. 
 
By the Numbers
0 – For just the second time this season, Cornerstone was held to zero service aces. 
46-22 – Cornerstone was unable to keep up offensively as Midland recorded 46 kills to the Golden Eagles 22. 
6/12 – Rylie Walters led the team with six kills and 12 digs. Olivia Keelean also recorded 12 digs. 
 
What's Next?
The Golden Eagles season has come to an end. The young CU squad will hit the offseason and begin preparing for the fall 2022 year with their young core.
