Late Comeback Falls Short for Men's Basketball in 74-69 loss at Hope

Box Score HOLLAND, Mich.  – Too many first half turnovers and a Hope second half run doomed the Golden Eagles in the GR Sports Hall of Fame Classic as Cornerstone fell 74-69 at Division 3 Hope College. The hosts also capitalized on more three pointers as they staved off a late CU comeback attempt. Trent Summerfield led Cornerstone with 18 points. 15 of those points came in the first half, including a buzzer-beating three to end the first half. This loss moves Cornerstone to 8-3 this season.

What you need to know? 
  • Just over a minute-and-a-half after tipoff, Cory Ainsworth put the Golden Eagles on the board, with Hope leading 6-2.
  • With Hope up 9-2, there was a 3:19 scoring drought for both teams, with Hope breaking the drought with a made free throw.
  • Trent Summerfield got his scoring for the night started with a three to cut the Hope lead to 10-5.
  • Down 13, CU made the next three baskets as Drew Knickerbocker, Christian Rodriguez, and Cory Ainsworth made layups to cut the Hope lead to 20-13.
  • With 3:20 to go in the first half, Trent Summerfield went on a scoring tear, dropping the next 12 Golden Eagle points. His final shot was a buzzer-beating three with one hand and two defenders in his face. Hope took a 35-29 lead into the half.
  • Cory Ainsworth got the second half started the same way he did the first, with a layup, putting the Golden Eagles down by four.
  • For the next ten minutes, each team traded shots, with CU led by Cory Ainsworth
  • With Hope up 16, 61-45 with 9:06 to play in the game, Cornerstone slowly started a comeback after Carter Nyp hit two free throws and Drew Knickerbocker knocked down back-to-back threes to cut the Hope lead to eight.
  • Carter Nyp went on a scoring tear of his own with a layup, dunk, and three as Hope only had a 66-60 lead with 5:09 to play.
  • After a few timely CU shots, Carter Nyp threw down another dunk as CU continued to chip away at the lead, down by three with 3:29 left in the game.
  • After almost a minute and a half scoring drought, Hope scored on a free throw with 2:01 to play before another scoring drought by both teams led to CU being forced to foul to try a late comeback.
  • Down eight, Christian Rodriguez made a three to cut the Hope lead to 74-69 with six seconds to play, but that score was how the game would end as the Golden Eagle comeback fell short.
