SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Golden Eagles took a trip across the state for a non-conference tilt at Spring Arbor and fell 60-53 Saturday afternoon.
Mackenzie Stien led CU with 14 points, while
Kennedy Helderop added 12 points and 3 steals. With this loss, the Golden Eagles drop to 3-10 overall.
Game Flow:
- Kennedy Helderop got the Golden Eagles on the board when she hit a jumper in the paint just over a minute into the game.
- Jaylee Long drilled a three to finish the first quarter scoring for CU, with Spring Arbor taking a 16-13 advantage into the first break.
- Olivia Kubik hit a three, then hit two free throws a couple possessions later to bring CU to 24 points with 3:36 to play in the second quarter.
- The Golden Eagles would not score again in the half, with Spring Arbor taking a 32-24 halftime lead.
- With SAU trying to pull away, Mackenzie Stien hit a jumper with 5:03 left in the third quarter and CU down 7, 39-32.
- Cornerstone struggled from the field for the rest of the third quarter, only hitting three free throws. Spring Arbor held a 46-35 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
- Down by 10, CU hit four straight jumpers, capped by Kennedy Helderop, to cut the SAU lead to 47-45 with 3:05 to play in the game.
- Cornerstone pulled within 1 point after a Jaylee Long three with 2:20 to play, but SAU would finish strong, capturing the win 60-53.
By the numbers:
14/0 – An interesting stat on the day, CU scored 14 bench points while SAU only saw starters score.
22/16 – Cornerstone scored more points in the paint, registering 22 compared to Spring Arbor's 16.

Stephanie Ainsworth and
Jaylee Long scored 6 points each off the bench to help keep CU in this game.

Cornerstone will play again after Christmas when they head across the city to play Grace Christian on Tuesday, December 28 at 5 p.m.
