Women's Basketball Falls 74-57 at D2 Davenport

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone kept pace in the first half with Division 2 Davenport, taking a three-point lead into halftime, but couldn't finish the job with DU taking a 74-57 win over the Golden Eagles. Mackenzie Stien led all scorers with 24 points and Kennedy Helderop added 13. The loss drops CU to 3-12 overall.
 
Game Flow:
  • Mackenzie Stien hit a jumper in the paint four seconds into the game to give Cornerstone an early 2-0 lead.
  • Down two, Kennedy Helderop drilled a three pointer to give the Golden Eagles a 7-6 lead with 8:08 to go in the first quarter.
  • With 2:12 left in the opening quarter, Mackenzie Stien hit another jumper to give CU a 16-14 lead, which would be the score entering the first break.
  • Cornerstone took their largest lead of the night when Kennedy Helderop splashed a three with 5:52 to go in the first half. This put the Golden Eagles up nine, 31-22.
  • Davenport would score the rest of the points in the second quarter, but CU still took a 31-28 lead into halftime.
  • It took about 4 ½ minutes for CU to get on the board in the second half, after Olivia Kubik hit a three to cut the DU lead to 39-34.
  • Kennedy Helderop made a clutch steal to end the third quarter and was fouled with one second to play. She hit one of two free throws As Davenport took a 13-point lead into the final break.
  • Olivia Kubik hit another three with 5:34 to play, cutting the DU lead to 11 points, 58-47.
  • Madison Fulks was fouled on a made jumper with 1:45 to play. She hit the free throw as the final CU points of the night with Davenport taking the win 74-57.
 
By the numbers:
24 – Mackenzie Stien led all scorers with 24 points in the contest.
3 – Kennedy Helderop added three steals to the mix.
30 – Points in the paint for CU, keeping pace with Davenport's 32. 
 
What's next? 
Cornerstone will play again after the New Year when they travel to WHAC foe Madonna on Wednesday, January 5 for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
