GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone continued their season on Monday evening against Lawrence Tech. The Golden Eagles led for all but 18 seconds of the game en route to a comfortable 80-61 victory, marking their first WHAC victory of the season and first win inside Mol Arena since October of 2019. Cornerstone (4-8, 1-3 WHAC) will look to continue that momentum on Wednesday evening with a cross-town rivalry game at Aquinas.
How it happened:
- A layup from Skylar Scholten put the Golden Eagles up 8-2 just four minutes into the game.
- With 1:11 to play in the first quarter, Kennedy Helderop had a sequence that included an offensive rebound and putback layup, followed by a steal that led to an and-one bucket. The sophomore converted the free throw to give Cornerstone a 20-14 lead after the first quarter.
- Sterling DeGayner tallied six points thanks to a pair of layups and a mid-range jumper in the second quarter to bring the Golden Eagles into halftime with a 33-28 lead.
- The Golden Eagles quickly built their lead by starting the third quarter on a 16-3 run. Cornerstone simmered down and only scored four points in the last five minutes of the third quarter, but maintained a 53-39 lead entering the final frame.
- Cornerstone continued to build their lead in the fourth quarter, thanks in part to sinking 12 of 13 free throws.
- A jumper from Katelyn Siebert with 50 seconds left extended Cornerstone's lead to 22 points, matching their largest lead of the season, before the final horn sounded with Cornerstone on top 80-61.
