GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone took on one of the best teams in the WHAC inside Mol Arena in receiving votes Concordia and too them to the wire falling at the buzzer 55-52. The Cardinals Allyson Hunt was the hero hitting a three at the buzzer to down the Golden Eagles. CU is now 4-11 on the year and 1-5 in WHAC play as they will hit the road on Saturday, February 13 to take on UNOH at 1 p.m.
Game Flow:
- Brooke Modderman opened up the scoring with a three off the Allyson Richards assist.
- Neither team could get an offensive rhythm as turnovers haunted both sides with a total of 11 in the first 4:45 as the score sat at 3-2 in favor of Cornerstone.
- Concordia hit back-to-back threes to go on top 8-3 with 4:53 to play in the first quarter.
- Four points from Shelby Nyboer and a layup from Ellen Kresge helped CU tie the game at 9-9 later in the period.
- Cornerstone capped off a 15-3 run to end the first period with a three from Layna Steel three to hold an 18-11 advantage.
- Just like in the first quarter, both offenses could not get anything going with just one point being scored in the first two and a half minutes.
- After Kennedy Helderop hit a three to go on top by nine, Cornerstone called timeout as the Cardinals responded with a quick 4-0 run off a pair of turnovers.
- Continued turnovers helped Concordia end the half on a 10-2 run cutting the Golden Eagles lead to just one at 25-24.
- The second half scoring opened with a Sterling DeGayner three to make it 28-24.
- Concordia took their first lead since 9-7 in the first quarter on an Alize Trip free throw to make it 31-30.
- A Kennedy Helderop three and pair of Sterling DeGayner free throws immediately gave the Golden Eagles the lead back, 35-33.
- At the end of three, Cornerstone held on to a 40-39 lead.
- CU got off to a great start in the fourth with a 5-0 run highlighted by an Allyson Richards and one to increase the lead to six, 45-39.
- CUAA took their first lead of the second half with 3:05 to play as Tris'tyn Williams hit a pair of free throws to go up 49-48.
- After Concordia got up by as much as four, the Golden Eagles were able to tie the game on a Shelby Nyboer layup with 32 seconds to go.
- With just over one second to play, Concordia was granted possession. After a timeout by the Cardinals they drew up a play that got Allyson Hunt open for a three that was buried at the buzzer. CUAA walked out of Mol Arena winners, 55-52.
