GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Powered by a
Shelby Nyboer career high of 25 points, the Golden Eagles won their third straight game and 200
thprogram home victory inside Mol Arena vs. Lourdes, 73-62. Cornerstone now moves to 7-11, 4-6 WHAC on the year. CU trailed early, but overcame the adversity as they lead the entire second half in the win. CU will continue the home stand and host rival Aquinas this Saturday, February 20 at 12:30 p.m.
Game Flow:
- The three ball hurt the Golden Eagles early as Lourdes hit two in a row to take an 8-4 advantage.
- The Gray Wolves increased the advantage to as large as six in the first quarter, but a Brooke Modderman three cut the Golden Eagle deficit to 16-13.
- Shelby Nyboer scored eight of the Golden Eagles 15 in the first but Cornerstone trailed 18-15.
- LU scored two quick buckets in the first minute of the second quarter to go on top by seven, 22-15.
- Brooke Modderman hit a huge and one off the pass from Katelyn Siebert that cut the Golden Eagle deficit back to three with four minutes to play in the first half.
- Allyson Richards hit a bucket just before the half to give Cornerstone their first lead of the game 32-31 going into the break.
- Cornerstone continued their run to begin the second half, capping off an 8-0 burst between the two quarters with a Layna Steele layup to lead 36-31.
- Allyson Richards hit a jumper with 4:32 to play in the third quarter to push the Golden Eagle lead to its largest at seven and force Lourdes into a timeout.
- After the timeout the Gray Wolves immediately cut it to three, but CU forced turnovers which led to easy buckets and brought the lead quickly back to seven with a minute to play in the third.
- Cornerstone led 50-43 at the end of the third quarter.
- The fourth quarter opened with a Maddison Fulks three off the Allyson Richards offensive rebound to increase the edge to double-digits, 53-43.
- The Gray Wolves responded with an 8-2 run to cut the CU lead to four at 55-51 with 6:27 to play.
- Skylar Scholten hit a three that increased the advantage back to seven, 60-53.
- An and one from Lourdes Kailani Broyles put Lourdes as close as they had been all second half at two points with 3:51 to play.
- Cornerstone erupted for an 8-2 run down the stretch capped off by a Maddison Fulks three to take control, 68-60.
- The Golden Eagles hit their free throws down the stretch to earn their third straight victory, 73-62.
