Women's Basketball comes up short against Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles took a three-game winning streak into a big rivalry game against the Saints on Saturday afternoon inside Mol Arena. Cornerstone struggled offensively and was held to a season-low 44 points in the 53-44 setback. The loss brings the Golden Eagles' record to 7-12 overall, 4-7 WHAC heading into the final pair of games of the regular season, which includes Lawrence Tech on Monday and Rochester on Tuesday.

Game Flow:
  • Shelby Nyboer got the game started with a layup on Cornerstone's first possession.
  • The Golden Eagles missed their next seven shots from the field before Nyboer converted an And-1 layup with two minutes to go in the first quarter.
  • Sterling DeGayner hit a three-pointer with 38 seconds to go to give CU a 12-10 lead, but Aquinas sank two free throws in the final seconds to make it an even 12-12 game after the first quarter.
  • Both teams led by as many as five points in the second quarter, but it was the Saints who entered halftime with the lead, 29-25, thanks in part to an 11-1 run over a three minute span.
  • A relatively uneventful third quarter saw only 15 total points, all seven of Cornerstone's came from Shelby Nyboer. After leading by as many as ten points, Cornerstone scored the final five points of the quarter to cut the deficit to just five, 37-32.
  • The Golden Eagles cut the Saints' lead to as little as three points on three different occasions in the fourth quarter, but Aquinas went 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final minute to seal the game with a 53-44 final.

By the numbers:
19/12 – Shelby Nyboer led the way with 19 points and 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
