GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After leading by 19 at the half, the Golden Eagles were held to just 33 points in the second half, resulting in a 94-89 loss vs. Rochester on senior day. The win gives Rochester the WHAC Regular Season Championship and drops Cornerstone to 12-5, 9-3 WHAC to conclude the regular season. CU will host a WHAC Tournament game on Thursday with the opponent and time yet to be announced.
What you need to know?
- The two seniors who do not normally start got the action started for the Golden Eagles with a pair of driving layups to give CU a 4-0 lead two minutes into the game.
- Five points from Christian Rodriguez and a 4-4 clip at the free throw line increased the Cornerstone run to 13-2 to begin the game.
- A three from Rochester brought the score to 19-12 before a Rochester injury timeout stopped play.
- CU increased the lead to as many as 10 on multiple occasions, but the Warriors continued to chip away, as an Andre Johnson three made it 29-25 with 7:47 to play.
- Cornerstone went on a 10-2 run that saw a pair of Christian Rodriguez threes to make it 37-25.
- Tyler Baker hit a huge and one three to push the advantage to 43-29 with 4:46 to play in the half.
- From the 7:47 mark to the 2:50 mark, Cornerstone went on a 19-4 run to lead by as many as 19.
- In the first half the Golden Eagles shot 57.1% from the field, 61.5% from behind the arc, hit 16 free throws, and saw 14 points each from Cory Ainsworth and Christian Rodriguez to lead 56-37.
- Rochester came out firing to begin the second half, going on an 8-2 run before calling a timeout to cut the Golden Eagle advantage to 13 at 58-45.
- Cory Ainsworth then went to work, scoring the next five points for Cornerstone to put them back on top 63-47.
- A three from RU's Andrew Kline cut it to as low as eight in the second half, but Riley Costen responded with a huge and one to increase the edge back to 13 at 71-58 with 11:33 to play.
- Once again the Warriors made a big run to continue to make this a game, scoring 10 straight points to bring the CU advantage to just four at 75-71.
- Virgil Walker Jr. hit a layup that tied the game at 81 with 4:56 to play. This is the first time the game was tied all day.
- A put-back bucket by Cannon Campbell put Rochester on top for the first time in the game, 87-85.
- After Riley Costen tied the game with a pair of free throws, Andrew Kliune hit a huge three to give Rochester the 90-87 lead.
- Rochester then fed Virgil Walker Jr. in the final two minutes as he got to the line multiple times and the Warriors held on for the incredible comeback to defeat CU 94-89.
