GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Golden Eagles finished their sprint to the end of the regular season with four games in seven days. CU went 3-1 in that stretch with their only loss being a home heartbreaker vs. Rochester in the regular season finale with the WHAC Regular Season Championship on the line. CU finishes the regular season 12-5, 9-3 WHAC and earns the three seed in the WHAC Tournament as they will host Concordia on Thursday at 7 p.m.
WHAC Tournament Parings
In a condensed year that saw every WHAC team finish with different records, CU earned the three seed with a .801 score in the Big South model being used for WHAC Regular Season finishes this season. CU will play Concordia on Thursday at 7 p.m. Other standings in the WHAC go as follows: Rochester is the one seed and WHAC Regular Season Champion, Indiana Tech is the two seed, Madonna is the four seed, Lourdes is the five seed, Aquinas is the seven seed, and Lawrence Tech is the eight seed.
Program Record for Blocks
The Golden Eagles broke yet another program record this past Monday at Lawrence Tech with 12 blocks. Cornerstone had recorded 11 team blocks on three separate occasions over their history but never hit 12. Sophomore Cory Ainsworth tied Sam Vander Sluis for the individual single game block record, with seven of the 12 in that game. Ainsworth has 37 blocks on the year for an average of 2.17 per game, which is good for ninth in the NAIA this season.
WHAC Tournament History
Veteran Head Coach Kim Elders has been a master of the conference tournament winning 10 titles and going 58-14 all-time. Last season, Cornerstone went to the WHAC Title game, but fell at Madonna. In the last 10 seasons, the Golden Eagles have won four WHAC Tournament Titles with their last one being in 2017.
Scouting Concordia
Concordia went 7-10, 5-7 WHAC in the regular season to earn sixth in the WHAC this year. In their last six games the Cardinals have gone 3-3 beating all the teams below them in the standings and falling to all the teams above them in the standings. 10 different CUAA players have started a game with Thomas Hronis leading the team in PPG with 15.7. Hronis lives and dies at the three point line ranking fourth in the NAIA with 3.7 made threes a game. Concordia as a team defensively guards the three-point line well, holding opponents to 31.6% from deep.
History vs. Concordia
Head Coach Kim Elders has his best record against any WHAC opponent against Concordia. He is 55-5 all-time and won the last 13 meetings. Earlier this year, CU scored a season high 109 points against the Cardinals and won by 35, 109-74. In the 13 game win streak for CU over CUAA, Cornerstone has won 10 of those games by double-figures.
