GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In the first ever spring WHAC soccer match for the Golden Eagles, Cornerstone and Cleary tied 0-0 after double overtime. This is the first tie of the season for CU as they have now completed one of six contests they will play this spring due to COVID-19. On the year, Cornerstone is 3-2-1, 3-1-1 WHAC as they will travel to Madonna on Saturday, March 6 for a 2 p.m. match.
The Highlights:
- The best chance of the first half came in the 24th minute as Jason Lugo missed wide on a shot just inside the 18-yard box.
- Cornerstone held Cleary without a shot the entire first half, leaving goalkeeper Alan Mendoza clean in net at the half.
- Cleary took control in the second half, with much more possession recording their first shot of the game in the 57th minute.
- The Cougars had three total shots in the second half, while Cornerstone had none giving the two sides three shots a piece after 90 minutes of play.
- Things began to get very physical in the first overtime period as Cleary was tagged with two yellow cards in the 97th and 99th minute.
- Right at the end of the first overtime, Abe House had a header opportunity that went just wide to keep us scoreless headed to overtime number two.
- CU had two more shots in the second overtime, but the pace slowed down as both teams started to feel heavy legs after 110 minutes of play. The game ended scoreless for the first tie of the Golden Eagles 2020-21 season.
