Men’s Volleyball falls in non-conference battle with (9) Saint Xavier

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  – The Golden Eagles took on their third ranked team in six games, with a home match vs. number nine Saint Xavier as the team fell in straight sets 25-17, 25-18, 25-20. Cornerstone is now 0-6 on the year and remains 0-3 in WHAC play as they will get back to conference action tomorrow at Indiana Tech at 6 p.m. 
 
Game Recap – Saint Xavier – 3 Cornerstone - 0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-20)
  • Jacob Brinks scored the first point of the game for CU on a kill off the set from Max Hernandez. Saint Xavier responded to go on top 9-5. 
  • The attack was dominant for the Cougars in set one, recording 15 kills to the Golden Eagles three taking set one 25-17. 
  • The Golden Eagles came out of the first set with some energy, scoring the first three points on an Alex Hekman service ace, Jacob Brinks kill, and Max Hernandez kill. 
  • Max Hernandez continued to use the left hand out of the set for some high-powered dumps to keep the Golden Eagles on top in set two. With the help of a kill from Cade Meza, CU got on top 9-6. 
  • SXU responded with an 13-5 run in set two, highlighted by a strong serve to go on top 19-14. 
  • Saint Xavier ended set two hitting a dominate, .444 to complete the comeback and win 25-18. 
  • The Cougars got off to their first strong start to a set, taking an 8-4 lead capped off by a Jake McClain kill. 
  • Cornerstone quickly cut the deficit back to two with three straight points highlighted by a Dellen Veldhouse service ace to make it 9-7. 
  • Cornerstone continued to hang around but was never able to take the lead in set three, as an attack error by Max Hernandez ended the set 25-20.

.450 – Saint Xavier was dominant on the attack tonight hitting .450 on the match with 47 kills and 11 errors. 
5 – Setter Max Hernandez led the Golden Eagles in kills with five. 
1 – Jacob Brinks and Max Hernandez each had a solo block on the day.

Cornerstone goes right back to WHAC play with a 6 p.m. road match at Indiana Tech tomorrow night.
