Men's Volleyball comes up short to Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After ten consecutive road matches, the men's volleyball team finally returned home to Mol Arena on Tuesday night to take on Aquinas. After falling short in the first two sets, Cornerstone won the third set and nearly forced a fifth set but a 26-24 setback in the fourth frame ended the match 3-1 in favor of AQ. Cornerstone (2-17, 0-9 WHAC) will be back in action inside Mol Arena on Friday night when they host Siena Heights at 6 p.m. 

Game Recap: Cornerstone 1 – Aquinas 3 (14-25, 17-25, 25-19, 24-26)
  • A kill from Mitchell Nichols in the early goings of the first set gave Cornerstone a 6-3 lead. 
  • Aquinas turned the tables and used a 9-3 run to snag a 12-9 lead.
  • Shortly thereafter, Aquinas went on an 8-0 run thanks in part to five CU attack errors to take a 22-11 lead before winning the first set 25-14. 
  • The Saints started out set two with four consecutive points. 
  • A kill from Cade Meza and back-to-back service errors from Aquinas brought the score to 7-7.
  • The rest of the set saw five lead changes until Aquinas ended the set on a 10-1 run to win it 25-17.
  • Max Hernandez tallied a kill to give Cornerstone an early 6-3 lead in the third set. 
  • Cornerstone broke an 8-8 tie by going on a 7-2 run to lead 15-10. 
  • Aquinas chiseled the deficit down to 19-17, but back-to-back kills from Jacob Brinks gave Cornerstone the 25-19 lead, forcing a fourth set. 
  • The teams were within three points of each other for the entirety of the fourth set, with Aquinas having the upper hand most of the way. 
  • Aquinas had two chances to put the match away up 24-22 in the fourth set, but Cornerstone was able to keep the match going by winning the next two points. 
  • The Saints took the next two points to win the set 26-24 and the match 3-1.

10 – Cade Meza had his fourth consecutive match with double digit kills.
8 – Alex Hekman had a team-high eight digs
7 – Seth VanderKooi had a season-high seven kills.
5 – Jacob Brinks led the team with five blocks.

Cornerstone (2-17, 0-9 WHAC) will host receiving votes Siena Heights on Friday at 6 p.m.
