Second half dooms Women’s Soccer 5-1 at rival Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  – The Golden Eagles took on their first NAIA top 25 team this season in rival and number 18 Aquinas on the road Wednesday evening and fell 5-1 after the Saints scored four in the second half. Amber Nicholson scored the lone goal for CU right before the half to tie things at one, but Aquinas continued to hit their stride in the second half to drop Cornerstone to 4-2-1 on the year. Another tough opponent is on the docket this Saturday as CU will host number 22 Northwestern Ohio at 2 p.m. over at Midwest United. 
 
The Highlights:
  • The Saints scored just 17 seconds into the game on a Hannah Crum goal that was assisted from Ariana Garcia to take the quick 1-0 edge. 
  • After the first 10 minutes, Cornerstone started to take over some possession, as Madison Radcliffe, Jozlyn VanTol, and Phoebe LaCroix all recorded shots. 
  • Right before halftime, Amber Nicholson scored the equalizer with her first goal of the season on an assist from Sierah Adams
  • At the start of the second half, Aquinas once again scored in the first minute, needing just 49 seconds this time to go back on top 2-1 with another goal from Hannah Crum. 
  • Phoebe LaCroix nearly responded right away hitting the crossbar on a shot in the 49th minute. 
  • AQ found an insurance goal in the 64th minute, as Ariana Garcia scored on an assist from Hannah Crum to make it 3-1. 
  • The rest of the half was dominated by Aquinas, as two more goals were scored in the final 20 minutes to give the Saints the 5-1 win over Cornerstone. 
 
By the Numbers:
1 – Amber Nicholson scored her first goal in her career in the final minute of the first half. 
5 – Freshman Sierah Adams joined Laura Helder, Ericka Mick, and Jozlyn VanTol at the top of the table in points with her first assist of the season to total five points. 
4 – CU and Aquinas each recorded four shots in the first half. 
17-2 – CU was outshot 17-2 in the second half. 
7-2 – Aquinas recorded five more corner kicks than Cornerstone in the game. 
 
What's next? 
Cornerstone will play another NAIA Top 25 team in Grand Rapids on Saturday, as they host number 22 Northwestern Ohio at Midwest United Fields for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
