GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After 13 days away from the field, the Golden Eagles returned to action on Friday to host Indiana Tech in the WHAC opener. Cornerstone struggled in the first game, showing just one hit in a 9-1 loss before exploding for 13 runs in game two to salvage the split. The Golden Eagles will bring an 8-4 record into tomorrow afternoon's games against Northwestern Ohio.
Game One: Cornerstone 1 – Indiana Tech 9
- Indiana Tech got on the board with three runs in the top of the second inning, two of which came with two outs.
- Mikayla Meade was able to limit the damage by stranding three warriors on base by ending the inning with a popout.
- The Warriors tacked on another run in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead.
- Indiana Tech tallied four hits in the top of the fifth, but were only able to score one, as Meade left the bases loaded with a strikeout.
- A three-run home run highlighted a four spot in the top of the sixth inning for Indiana Tech to take a 9-0 lead.
- With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Sierra Sanchez broke up the no-hitter by drilling a home run off the scoreboard in left center field.
- The game ended 9-1 after six innings due to mercy rule.
Game Two: Cornerstone 13 – Indiana Tech 6
- Sierra Sanchez started game two off the same way she ended the first game by sending one over the fence for her third home run of the season.
- Indiana Tech evened the game at 1-1 with a run in the second inning.
- The Warriors hit a pair of home runs in the top of the third inning to take a 4-1 lead.
- Cornerstone evened the game at 4-4 thanks to an RBI double from Kaitlin Johnson and a two-RBI double from Aliyah Lemmer.
- Indiana Tech grabbed the lead right back thanks to a two-run home run in the top of the fourth, making it 6-4.
- Allisen Martz cut the lead in half with a solo homer off the scoreboard in left center to make it 6-5.
- Cornerstone exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, capped off by a grand slam from McKenzie Butgereit
- After a quick sixth inning and top of the seventh inning, Cornerstone finished on top by a score of 13-6.
- Mikayla Meade earned the win in the circle after pitching four innings in relief.
