GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles continued their season on Saturday by hosting Northwestern Ohio. UNOH prevailed 6-2 in game one while Cornerstone came out on top 4-3 in game two. The split brings the Golden Eagles record to 9-5, 2-2 WHAC and will return to action with another home doubleheader next week Saturday when Madonna comes to town.
Game one: Cornerstone 2 – UNOH 6
- The Racers rallied for four hits and two runs in the top of the first inning.
- Cornerstone quickly responded in the bottom of the inning, as Sierra Sanchez had a leadoff double and McKenzie Butgereit drove her in with a two run home run to make it 2-2.
- Northwestern Ohio doubled their score and took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning.
- The Racers tacked on one more run in each of the sixth and seventh innings and closed out on top 6-2.
Game two: Cornerstone 4 – UNOH 3
- Cornerstone struck first in game two with a Kaitlin Johnson sacrifice fly in the first inning.
- Northwestern Ohio knotted it up at 1-1 in the top of the second inning.
- The Racers took a 3-1 lead with a pair of RBI hits in the third inning.
- Aliyah Lemmer and Kailin Hurrle led off the fifth inning with back-to-back singles. Sierra Sanchez drove in both of them with a two-RBI triple to right field to tie it at 3-3. McKenzie Butgereit gave CU a 4-3 lead with a sacrifice fly to drive in Sanchez.
- The Racers loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth inning, but Kaitlin Johnson got two clutch popouts to keep it 4-3.
- UNOH put the tying run on base in the top of the seventh, but the Golden Eagles got the next three batters out to seal the 4-3 victory.
