Softball splits doubleheader with WHAC favorite Madonna

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Cornerstone Softball team continued its home stretch on Saturday by hosting Madonna, who is receiving votes in the national poll and is the favorite to win the WHAC title for the fourth straight year. The Golden Eagles came out strong by winning the first game 6-3 but fell short by a score of 5-1 in game two. The split brings Cornerstone's record to 10-6 overall, 3-3 WHAC heading into Wednesday afternoon's home doubleheader against Aquinas.

Game one: Cornerstone 6 – Madonna 3
  • Sierra Sanchez started things off with a double to deep right field in the bottom of the first inning. She later came home thanks to a Madonna error to give CU a 1-0 lead. 
  • Aliyah Lemmer hit a double in the second inning and also came through to score by way of a Madonna error. 
  • The Crusaders worked in a run to make it 2-1 in the third inning. 
  • Aliyah Lemmer started off the fourth inning with a base hit to left field. Following back-to-back sacrifice bunts from Allisen Martz and Mikayla Meade, Sierra Sanchez came through with the RBI single to make it 3-1. 
  • In the fifth inning, Allisen Martz came through with a clutch three RBI double to center field to double CU's score and make it a 6-1 game. 
  • The Crusaders worked their way back into the game by scoring two runs in the sixth inning, but Kaitlin Johnson, entering the game in relief, was able to get a clutch strikeout to leave three runners on base. 
  • Johnson was able to close things out by getting three flyouts in the seventh inning, giving CU the 6-3 win. 

Game two: Cornerstone 1 – Madonna 5
  • Sydney Carr got the scoring started with a solo home run to left field in the second inning. 
  • Madonna gained their first lead of the day by scoring three runs in the top of the fourth inning, all of which were unearned. 
  • A two-run home run for the Crusaders made the score 5-1 in the fifth inning.
  • The Golden Eagles were held hitless for the last four innings of the game and ultimately fell 5-1. 

By the Numbers
16/8 – Sierra Sanchez has reached base safely in all 16 games this season and is currently riding an eight-game hitting streak.
4 – Mikayla Meade put in 5.2 innings of work in game one, surrendering only three earned runs on her way to her fourth win of the season.
3 – Allisen Martz had a career high three RBI in game one.
2 – Kaitlin Johnson, Sierra Sanchez, and Aliyah Lemmer all had multi-hit games in game one.

Cornerstone will conclude their stretch of seven consecutive home doubleheaders on Wednesday when they take on Aquinas starting at 3:30 p.m
