Copado scores overtime game winner to push Women’s Soccer past Madonna

LIVONIA, Mich.  – Senior defender Mya Copado was the Golden Eagle hero on Monday afternoon in the regular season finale, scoring a game winning overtime goal off a free kick to down Madonna 2-1 on the road. Copado had a goal and an assist in the game as CU ends the regular season above .500 with a 5-3-1 record. Cornerstone will now enter the WHAC Tournament on Saturday with quarterfinal action. The tournament seeding and opponents will be announced later this week and can be found at cugoldeneagles.com. 
 
The Highlights:
  • Cornerstone put the pressure on offensively early, earning three corner kicks in the first nine minutes of play. 
  • On the third corner in the ninth minute, Kylie Adams found the net with a header off the cross from Mya Copado
  • From the 10th minute on through the half, Madonna started to take over, recording nine shots, and outshooting the Golden Eagles by seven in the first half. 
  • Right before the half the Crusaders found the net, as Grace Thomas scored her first goal on a rebound in the 45th minute. 
  • The second half was dominated by Madonna as they recorded 13 shots. Mikayla Johnson was solid in net however, recording six saves to keep things tied and force overtime. 
  • Madonna recorded two early shots to begin the overtime, but one was high and one was saved to keep the game tied. 
  • Kylie Adams recorded the first overtime shot for CU in the 95th minute and it went wide right. 
  • After a foul in the 100th minute on Madonna, Mya Copado stepped up to take the free kick from 30 yards out and she found the net for the walk-off CU winner with just 14 seconds remaining in the OT.
By the Numbers:
1 – Defender Mya Copado recorded her first goal and assist of the season in the win. 
9 – Mikayla Johnson recorded a season high nine saves on the game. 
3 – Kylie Adams now leads the team with three goals this season. 
 
What's next? 
Cornerstone will prepare for the WHAC Tournament Quarterfinal on Saturday with seeding and opponents to be announced later this week on cugoldeneagles.com.
