Offense powers Softball to pair of road wins at Lourdes

SYLVANIA, Ohio – Cornerstone continued the hot start to the season, winning a pair of games at Lourdes in a non-conference double-header scoring a total of 20 runs in 14 innings. CU won game one 13-5 and followed that with a 7-5 game two victory to improve to 3-1 on the year. Sierra Sanchez hit a three-run home run that secured the game two victory to highlight the high-powered offense. Cornerstone will return home to take on Bethel University of Indiana for a double-header on Tuesday, March 9 starting at 3:30 p.m.

Game One: Cornerstone – 13 Lourdes - 5
  • A pair of Lourdes errors helped Cornerstone get on the board first in the top of the first as Kaitlin Johnson singled to score Alessa Baldwin-Buchner and give CU the 1-0 edge.
  • Lourdes immediately responded in the bottom of the first, as Cornerstone committed three errors in the inning allowing two Gray Wolves to score, giving them the 2-1 lead.
  • In the second inning, Lourdes added two more runs on a sacrifice bunt and a double steal to increase their lead to 4-1.
  • In the third, Cornerstone erupted for four runs to regain the lead. Alicia Ontiveros got it started with an RBI single, followed by a fielder's choice and Lourdes error that scored Molly Poole, and then a pair of RBI singles from Sierra Sanchez and Alessa Baldwin-Buchner
  • In the fourth, Lourdes tied the game back up with an RBI double from Kayla Gauthier to make it 5-5.
  • Cornerstone then doubled the score line in the fifth to pull away. McKenzie Butgereit got things started with an RBI single. Two more runs then scored on a Lourdes wild pitch and error. Kaitlin Johnson then tripled to score a run, and Morgan Murat singled to bring home Kaitlin Johnson and make the score 10-5.
  • Kaitlin Johnson continued to stay hot at the plate, adding to the scoring with a two RBI double to left center in the seventh to bring the lead to 12-5.
  • Mikayla Meade hit an RBI single for the final run of the game as Kaitlin Johnson closed things out on the mound to secure the 13-5 game one victory.

Game Two: Cornerstone – 7 Lourdes - 5
  • Game two started off with a bang as Sierra Sanchez walked to open things and later scored as McKenzie Butgereit doubled to right field.
  • Lourdes quickly tied things as Alyssa Ziegler scored on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the first to make it 1-1.
  • Alexis Nowowiecki later singled in the inning for the Gray Wolves to give LU the 2-1 lead as Hailey Cramer came around to score.
  • Cornerstone responded to take the lead in the third inning with three runs, highlighted by a pair of RBI singles from Sierra Sanchez and Kaitlin Johnson to making it 4-2.
  • In the bottom of the third, McKenzie Butgereit made a great save to keep the ball in the infield but it did not prevent Lourdes from scoring as they got one run back on a single to bring the CU lead to just one at 4-3.
  • Lourdes was able to regain the lead in the bottom of the fifth scoring on back-to-back RBI singles to make it 5-4.
  • Cornerstone refused to go down lightly however as Sierra Sanchez became the hero, hitting a three-run bomb to right field that scored Kailin Hurrle and Molly Poole to make it 7-5.
  • Mikayla Meade had been in relief, but was subbed out for Kaitlin Johnson who was able to avoid a walk and strikeout the side to record the save and give Cornerstone the 7-5 game two victory.
