Softball splits pair of close games vs. Lawrence Tech

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone returned home from a six-game road trip on Friday afternoon and earned a split with Lawrence Tech, winning game one 5-4 and falling in game two 6-4 after a big sixth inning from the Blue Devils. CU now heads into senior day with a 14-12, 6-8 WHAC record as they take on Cleary back at the CU Softball Field tomorrow starting at 1 p.m. The Golden Eagles will honor seven seniors at 12:45 p.m. before the action begins.

Game One: Cornerstone – 5 Lawrence Tech - 4
  • Both offenses got off to a quick start as an early CU error allowed two Lawrence Tech runners to score later in the inning on an RBI triple from Callie Tatum and an RBI groundout from Brittany Wieland.
  • Cornerstone immediately responded in the bottom of the inning after an LTU error, as Mckenzie Butgereit and Kaitlin Johnson each hit RBI doubles to tie the game at two.
  • The Golden Eagles took the lead in the second after Allisen Martz walked and then later scored on a pair of sacrifice bunts and another Lawrence Tech error making it 3-2.
  • The CU defense shined in the third and fourth innings as Mikayla Meade snagged a line drive to get a double play and Sierra Sanchez made a sliding catch in left to end each inning with no damage done and maintain a 3-2 edge.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Kaitlin Johnson added some insurance runs for CU after the pitchers had started to get into a rhythm with a two RBI double to make it 5-2.
  • A pair of pinch hitters in the top of the sixth allowed the Blue Devils to get two runs back and cut the deficit to 5-4. Mikayla Meade did a good job get out of the inning however and keep it a one-run game.
  • Kaitlin Johnson came out to pitch the seventh and sealed the victory after an error put a runner on second with no one out. Johnson recorded her third save of the season to win game one 5-4.

Game Two: Lawrence Tech – 6 Cornerstone – 4
  • Lawrence Tech just like game one saw some early offense as the three-hole hitter Callie Tatum hit a solo homerun off starter Kaitlin Johnson to give them a 1-0 advantage.
  • Both starters settled in as Kaitlin Johnson and LTU starter Madison Shumaker each did not give up a run through the next one and a half innings of play as the score remained 1-0.
  • In the bottom of the third the pitcher Kaitlin Johnson reached on an error to score Sierra Sanchez and tie the game at one.
  • Cornerstone then took the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Allisen Martz hit an RBI double to score the pinch runner Abby Brower. This was Cornerstone's first lead of the game at 2-1.
  • Sierra Sanchez later hit an RBI triple in the inning to increase the advantage to two runs at 3-1.
  • Alessa Baldwin-Buchner immediately followed with an RBI triple of her own that scored Sanchez and made it 4-1.
  • Ashley Loera came in to pitch and relieve Kaitlin Johnson in the top of the fifth inning.
  • Lawrence Tech got a run back in the top of the fifth on an RBI groundout to make it 4-2.
  • The Blue Devils continued to chip away in the top of the sixth inning, recording four consecutive hits to lead off the inning that scored two runs and tied the game at four.
  • Later in the inning the Katie Courneya hit a ground rule double that scored two more runs and gave Lawrence Tech the lead back, 6-4.
  • Cornerstone was unable to find any response, falling in game two, 6-4.
