Softball drops a pair to rival Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a double-header that took just over six and a half hours of total time to complete, Cornerstone dropped a pair to rival Aquinas, 18-3 and 7-4 in eight innings. On and off rain occurred throughout the day with a 35-minute delay coming in game two due to lightning in the area. Cornerstone drops to 10-8 on the year and 3-5 in conference play as they get set to begin an eight game road trip at Lourdes on Friday April 9.

Game One: Aquinas – 18 Cornerstone - 3
  • Aquinas started the game with three straight hits, which led to two first inning runs to take an early 2-0 lead.
  • The Saints again got off to a strong start in the second inning, as Courtney Har led off the inning with a home run to left field to make it 3-0.
  • Sydney Dawso later in the second attempted a sacrifice bunt, and some sloppy CU defense allowed two more runs to score to make it 5-0 Aquinas.
  • Two more Cornerstone errors allowed Darrien Robe to hit a two RBI single and again increase the lead to 7-0.
  • Sydney Carr and Molly Poole each recorded singles in the bottom of the second but each of them tried to extended bases and were thrown out to end the inning.
  • Aquinas once again was able to add a run in the third making it 8-0.
  • The runs continued for the Saints with one more scoring in the fourth on a Natalie Vand RBI single to bring the lead to its highest at 9-0.
  • The Golden Eagle offense finally found its stride in the fourth, scoring three runs with a two RBI double from Molly Poole and an RBI single from Aliyah Lemmer to make it 9-3.
  • Aquinas continued to score runs, doing so on the reliever Abby Nachazel as Darrien Robe hit an RBI single to make it 10-3.
  • After a scoreless sixth, AQ's Jordan Humit hit a two RBI bases loaded double to increase the lead back to nine at 12-3.
  • AQ continued to pour it on in the top of the seventh, scoring eight runs to lead 18-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
  • Cornerstone put in four pinch hitters in the bottom of the seventh, but was unable to score, falling 18-3.

Game Two: Aquinas – 7 Cornerstone - 4
  • Aquinas once again got on the board in the first inning of game two, scoring on a two out Jordan Humit single that scored Brooke Wila making it 1-0.
  • Izzy Dawson added another AQ run with a solo homer to left field that brought the CU deficit to two.
  • In the top of the fourth, Sierra Sanchez made two great catches in left field to help Kaitlin Johnson get a 1-2-3 inning in the circle and keep the score 2-0.
  • At 7:20 p.m. lightning struck within 10 miles which caused a delay until 8:05 p.m.
  • After the delay, Cornerstone scored their first run of the game, as Allisen Martz singled to score Bailey Anson and make it 2-1!
  • Alessa Baldwin-Buchner then singled to score two more and give the Golden Eagles the lead 3-2 in the fifth.
  • The lead did not last long, as Courtney Har hit a two-run home run to take the lead back 4-3.
  • Cornerstone had a quick response in the bottom of the sixth as Morgan Murat hits a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game 4-4.
  • Cornerstone threatened, but was unable to score in the bottom of the seventh stranding a runner at second as the game headed to extra innings tied at four.
  • In the eighth, Jordan Humit continued her strong day for AQ with an RBI double to give the Saints the 5-4 lead.
  • AQ then broke the game open with a two-run home run from Courtney Har to take the 7-4 lead.
