Baseball gives up 10 in the ninth resulting in 16-7 season ending loss vs. UNOH

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – In a game that saw a little bit of everything with a rain delay, a six-run comeback, and a 10-run inning, Cornerstone found themselves on the losing end of a 16-7 game in Ann Arbor against Northwestern Ohio. This was the team's second loss in the WHAC Tournament eliminating them from competition and ending their season. CU concludes their historic year at 19-17 overall and will now enter the offseason.

Game Recap – UNOH – 16 Cornerstone - 7
  • After a 1-2-3 first inning for Jared Riley, the Racers were able to squeak a run home in the second with two hit by pitches and a passed ball scored a run and made it 1-0.
  • In the top of the third after Riley faced two batters the rain began to come down and forced a delay in the action.
  • After roughly an hour delay, Riley returned to the mound like nothing happened and recorded the final two outs of the third as CU continued to trail 1-0.
  • Riley struggled to find the strike zone in the fifth hitting two batters and walking one to load the bases. UNOH then hit a grand slam to break the game open and make it 5-0.
  • Andrew VanDyke later entered to conclude the fifth and got the final out to get out of the inning and keep the deficit at five.
  • In the sixth, the Racers added one more run on an RBI single to bring their lead to 6-0.
  • Just when it looked like Cornerstone was out of it, they erupted for six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Three walks got things started, as Landon Poll, Daniel Freeman, Joshua Magley, and Jordan Wenzel each recorded RBI's in the inning. After six innings the game sat tied at six.
  • Both pitching staffs settled things down over the next two innings, as the game remained tied at six until the ninth.
  • In the ninth, Cornerstone could not find the strike zone and the Racers took advantage. CU needed three pitchers to get through the inning as they gave up 10 runs and all of a sudden trailed 16-6.
  • With just three outs remaining, Cornerstone got one run back on a Daniel Freeman single that scored Austin Hurt. That would be all however, as CU's season came to an end with a 16-7 loss vs. UNOH.

What's Next?
Cornerstone's historic 2020-21 campaign has come to an end with a 19-17 record and their best WHAC finish since the program restart in 2013.
