Pair of late goals down Men’s Soccer in season opener

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – After a 14th minute goal, the Golden Eagles were sitting pretty in the season opener on the road at Shawnee State, but a pair of late strikes from the Bears would be too much to overcome as CU fell 2-1. Shawnee State scored a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes with an equalizer in the 83rd minute and the go-ahead goal in the 84th, as Cornerstone could not hold on. Cornerstone will be back in action on Saturday at 11 a.m. as they conclude the trip to Ohio at Ohio Christian.

The Highlights:
  • The game started physically, as a yellow card was handed out just nine minutes in to Shawnee State's Mason Fannin.
  • Freshman Jeff Herrema recorded the first shot of the game nine minutes into the game as it went just wide.
  • Sophomore Nate Kaercher continued his assault on the net from last season scoring the game's first goal in the 14th minute off a feed from midfielder Christian Galloway
  • Alan Roman recorded an excellent first half in net with five saves to keep the Bears off the board and give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 edge at the break.
  • The physicality continued into the second half as SSU earned another early yellow card in the 51st minute.
  • Cornerstone was on the defense for much of the second half, but the defense held for 80 minutes.
  • Shawnee State found an equalizer in the 83rd minute on a goal from their leading scorer Kevin de Lange.
  • Just a minute and a half later, de Lange took another shot that hit the post and was later put in by Guillermo Conejo giving the Bears a 2-1 lead with just six minutes to play.
  • Cornerstone was unable to muster up a shot in the final six minutes as they fell 2-1 in their season opener.
