Women’s Soccer cruises past Saint Xavier in season opener

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  – The Golden Eagles opened the fall 2021 campaign with a strong showing, scoring four goals highlighted by a pair from Laura Helder to give CU the 4-0 win. Cornerstone used 23 players on the hot season opener as they move to 1-0-0 on the year and drop Saint Xavier to 0-2-0 overall. A week from today, Cornerstone will continue the season opening six game home stand vs. Huntington at 1 p.m. 
 
What you need to know?
  • Early in the game, Cornerstone stablished possession finding a pair of early shots that were both blocked by SXU defenders. 
  • Laura Helder saw a great chance nine minutes into the match off a pass from Katelyn Lane but missed just wide as the game remained scoreless. 
  • Right after the first water break, Laura Helder was able to find the net on a great cross from Kylie Adams that was volleyed past the keeper in the 16th minute. 
  • In the 22nd minute, substitute Arianna Rau made a great pass across the net that was put in by Julie Gouilliart to make it 2-0. 
  • The substitute Rau continued to play aggressive up the middle recording two great shots that just missed high and wide. 
  • The Golden Eagles took the 2-0 edge into the half. 
  • With the first half lead, first year keeper Angelina VanderBeek was subbed into net for CU for the second half. 
  • The second half began similar to the first, as Laura Helder returned the favor to Kylie Adams with an assist that allowed Adams to put the ball by the keeper and make it 3-0. 
  • Helder continued her strong day, carrying the ball all the way up the left sideline and scoring a great goal from just inside the 18-yard box to make it 4-0 in the 73rd minute. 
  • Head Coach Randy Strawser allowed many subs to get into the game in the second half, with 10 different substitutes seeing action on the hot day. 
  • With 14 minutes to play, CU entered their third keeper of the game as Samantha Sebright came in for Angelina VanderBeek
  • The subs continued the attack in the final 15 minutes but no more goals were scored as CU won 4-0. 
 
By the Numbers
5 – Laura Helder recorded a career high five points in a single game with two goals and one assist. 
32 – Cornerstone recorded 33 shots in the game their most since last year vs. Rochester. 
18 – The Saint Xavier keeper made 18 saves on the match.

CU continues the opening six game home stand a week from today vs. Huntington at 1 p.m.
