Men’s Soccer continues non-conference season vs. Saint Xavier

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles look to rebound from a 3-0 loss in the home opener, as they take on another Chicagolands Collegiate Athletic Conference foe in Saint Xavier on Tuesday, August 31 at 7 p.m. Tune into cugoldeneagles.com/watch for live coverage of the game on Tuesday night. 
 
First 10 and Last 10
The Golden Eagles have played great soccer so far this season for about 70 minutes, but have struggled in the first 10 minutes of contests and the last 10 minutes of contests. In CU's two losses, the team has given up a total of three their five goals in the first or last 10 minutes of the game. In the season opener, CU saw two goals netted in the final 10 minutes, while one of ONU's three goals last time out was in the first 10 minutes of the game. 
 
Finding a Lineup 
Through three games, Cornerstone has played 26 different players as they look to find a lineup heading into the WHAC season. So far, Abe House has played the most minutes with 245, and Jeshua Boggs is in a close second with 224 minutes. 
 
Scouting Saint Xavier 
The Cougars have sat right around .500 over the last five seasons and in the early 2021 season are in the same spot at 1-1 overall. The team opened the year with a 2-0 loss to number 24 Rio Grande before rebounding with a 3-1 win vs. WHAC foe Aquinas. Ed Vucinic is the SXU head coach and has been at the helm for 18 seasons and recorded a 173-142-19 overall record. Senior Ricardo Avalos returns for his final season as the biggest offensive threat for Saint Xavier. Avalos is a transfer from South Suburban Community College and scored eight goals in his first year with the Cougars in 2020 to lead the team. 
 
History vs. Saint Xavier
The Golden Eagles and Cougars have met 10 times since 2008 and CU has struggled to find the win column going 1-9 in those contests. Last season, CU played at Saint Xavier and lost 2-1 in a competitive contest. The lone win in the last 10 meetings came in 2014 in double-overtime, 2-1.
