GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone continued to struggle in finding the net, as they outshot Saint Xavier 13 to 10 but were unable to score falling 2-0. The game saw seven yellow cards and a red in a physical contest between the two sides. The Golden Eagles move to 1-3-0 on the year as they will have a week off before traveling to Goshen College on Wednesday, September 8 for a 4 p.m. match.
The Highlights:
- Despite Saint Xavier having a large chunk of possession early, Cornerstone recorded some great early opportunities with six shots in the first 25 minutes.
- CU's best chance came in the 21st minute as Luke Blickley headed a ball that was punched by the SXU keeper off the crossbar and over to keep the score 0-0.
- The header chances continued as Christian Galloway took seven corners in the first half hour of the match.
- In the 26th minute, Jeff Herrema and Jaeden Aguilera got tangled up and it resulted in both players receiving a yellow card.
- Ethan Pike after getting slightly out of position made two great saves in net in the 31st minute, diving back across the net after making the first save to prevent a goal.
- The Cougars subbed their goalkeeper in the 34th minute as Joel Estrada entered for Andres Zamora.
- Saint Xavier found the net in the 37th minute as Jaeden Aguilera dribbled through the defense until he found some space to shoot it past Ethan Pike and make it 1-0.
- Cornerstone trailed 1-0 at the end of the half.
- The Cornerstone worship night ended at the start of the second half, which brought an influx of roughly 400 fans to the crowd and spurred CU to a few great offensive opportunities. The Golden Eagles were unable to score however as they continued to trail 1-0 with 30 minutes to play.
- The game remained physical in the second half as two more yellows were handed out including one to Allan Barrientos.
- Saint Xavier made another goalie substitution in the 62nd minute, subbing in Isaac Carvajal, their third keeper of the game.
- Jaeden Aguilera added an insurance goal on a header that was crossed in by teammate Fabian Lopez to make it 2-0 Cougars.
- Jaeden Aguilera later received his second yellow card in the 84th minute which resulted in his ejection and multiple other yellows handed out.
- Cornerstone was unable to find a response as they fell 2-0 to move to 1-3-0 on the year.
