GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles traveled to a hostile environment to open WHAC play against rival Aquinas and the young Cornerstone squad walked out with a 3-0 sweep, 27-25, 25-23, 25-16. Cornerstone now makes it four straight wins against their rival, and 5-1 all-time against their former head coach Ryan Campbell to improve to 6-8, 1-0 WHAC on the year. Conference play continues back inside Mol Arena this weekend with a match vs. Indiana Tech on Friday night and UNOH on Saturday afternoon.
Game One: Cornerstone – 3 Aquinas 0 (27-25, 25-23, 25-16)
- Despite a huge and hostile Aquinas crowd, a young Golden Eagle team was unphased getting out to an 8-3 edge in set one with a block from Aubrey Lenz and Kylie Barron.
- The Saints responded with a 7-0 run to take a 10-9 lead behind a pair of service aces from Kenzi Dobosiewicz.
- A crucial ball handeling error by AQ setter Chloe Mitchell put CU on top 22-19.
- CU had a pair of set points, but the Saints responded to tie the set at 24. A kill from Olivia Keelean and an ace from Aubrey Lenz ended the set in the Golden Eagles favor though 27-25.
- A Kathryn Detweiler kill capped off an early 4-0 run in set two for CU to go on top 7-4.
- Cornerstone went on a 6-0 run later in the set to get their largest lead of five at 16-11 and force AQ to use a timeout.
- AQ responded with a 5-0 run to make the deficit just one at 21-20.
- The Golden Eagles refused to relinquish the lead however, closing out set two with a Rylie Walters kill, 25-23.
- Cornerstone carried the momentum into the third and final set, getting out to a 7-3 advantage with a pair of kills from Olivia Keelean.
- Rylie Walters later spurred a CU 6-0 run with an outstanding serve to increase the lead to 17-10.
- Olivia Keelean closed out the set-in impressive fashion with a kill off the AQ block to cruise to a 25-16 set three victory.
