GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Five goals were scored on Tuesday evening between Cornerstone and Bethel, but only by two players as Bethel's Esther Karhayu carried the Pilots to victory despite
Arianna Rau's best efforts to complete a comeback with two goals of her own. With the loss, Cornerstone suffers their first of the year and falls to 2-1-1 overall as they get set to open WHAC play vs. Madonna on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
What you need to know?
- Cornerstone commanded possession early as Sierah Adams recorded two of the Golden Eagles four early shots with one being saved and one being sent high.
- After Bethel made four substitutions including Esther Karhayu, the momentum started to change, as the Pilots recorded three late first half shots.
- Sophomore defender Hannah Luurtsma made some outstanding plays on the backline to contain Karhayu and keep the game scoreless at the end of the first half.
- In the second half the rain began to fall, and Kylie Adams began to fire from deep with her left foot. An attempt in the 53rd minute was deflected off the post and wide by the Bethel keeper to keep the game scoreless.
- Karhayu checked back in for the Pilots for her first second half action at the 64:01 mark. Just 28 seconds into being back in, she dribbled her way through two CU defenders and used the outside of her foot to score the first goal and make it 1-0.
- Just seven minutes later, Karhayu was delivered a great ball from Marah Franke to earn a break away and make it 2-0 Bethel.
- Cornerstone responded however within the minute as Arianna Rau scored on a rebound off a ball that was looped in toward the keeper and was difficult to handle for her first of the season to make it 2-1.
- In the 82nd minute, Cornerstone earned another corner kick and Julie Gouilliart who had been delivering great balls all day took the kick and found the head of Rau for a second goal to tie the game 2-2. Bethel keeper Corryn Berlin was injured on the play and it was stopped for roughly five minutes before she was cleared to continue in net.
- Regulation ended 2-2 as CU would play their second overtime game of the year.
- Karhayu started the overtime period, and after two shots early in the period on break away chances, she found the net on her third opportunity, using her speed to outrun the Golden Eagle defense.
