GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles struggles continued against the defending WHAC Champion (14) Aquinas Saints as they fell 4-0 to end a six game homestand. CU now drops to 2-3-1 and 0-2-0 in conference play as they will hit the road for the first time this year later this week with another WHAC contest. On the docket next is Concordia as Cornerstone will travel there on Friday, October 1 for a 4 p.m. match.
What you need to know?
- Cornerstone was called for an early unfortunate foul just inside the 18-yard box, that gave AQ a penalty kick in the 9th minute. Senior Hannah Crum found the bottom corner and gave the Saints a 1-0 lead.
- Julie Gouilliart recorded the only Golden Eagle shot of the match in the 13th minute.
- A second goal was scored just four minutes later as Sydney Shenk chipped it past Hope Steenwyk on a breakaway after the kick from AQ keeper Tairyn Webb to make it 2-0.
- Macy Hollingsworth received the lone yellow card of the match in the 27th minute.
- Samantha Sebright entered to play keeper for the second half for Cornerstone.
- After spending so much time on the defensive end in the second half, CU suffered an own goal in the 38th minute as Hannah Luurtsma looked to chest the ball back to her keeper but it took a bad bounce into the net and made it 3-0.
- Cornerstone did well to hold AQ in the second half, but the Saints earned multiple set pieces with nine second half corner kicks.
- On the eighth corner kick of the half, AQ found a fourth goal as defender Merin McDermott headed in the cross from Sydeny Shenk to make it 4-0.
- CU was unable to record any offensive threat, falling 4-0 at home to the Saints to drop to 2-3-1 on the year.
