GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles held Aquinas to just three points through the first 10 minutes of the contest as they led from start to finish and earned a 70-57 road victory vs. their rivals. Head Coach
Kim Elders and the Golden Eagles have now won 11 straight contests vs. Aquinas and they improve to 13-7, 7-3 WHAC on the year. Cornerstone has one more road game in this long stretch away from Mol Arena as they will travel to receiving votes Indiana Tech on Wednesday, January 19 at 8 p.m.
What you need to know?
- After two early buckets by Cory Ainsworth and Christian Rodriguez, the two teams went into a three-minute scoring drought before Aquinas finally found their first bucket of the game with a three at the 5:40 mark of the first half.
- Cornerstone then went on a 12-0 run with threes from Carter Nyp and Jonny Strube to increase their lead to 16-3. Aquinas had just three points 10-minutes into the game.
- Carter Nyp again hit a three late first half which was followed up by a Jack Joldersma layup that gave the Golden Eagles a 28-18 advantage going into the half.
- Christian Rodriguez hit an early three in the second half that capped a CU 5-0 run to start it and gave them a 15-point edge.
- Trevor Ballard hit a three for the Saints later in the half that cut the deficit under 10 for the first time this period at 38-31.
- Gabe Overway later hit some free throws that brought the Saints as close as they have been all game, trailing 38-35.
- Christian Rodriguez ended the AQ run with his own 5-0 scoring streak that saw an and-one converted.
- A layup by Jack Joldersma at the 8:45 to play mark increased the CU lead back to 10.
- The cherry on top came with 2:03 to play, as Jack Joldersma threw down a dunk to give Cornerstone the 63-49 advantage.
- Cornerstone led by double-digits the remainder of the contest and took home a 70-57 victory for their 11th straight W against Aquinas.
