Men’s Volleyball splits to conclude 2022 MMVI

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  –  The Golden Eagles closed out the season opening weekend with a split on day two, taking the first match of the day in five sets vs. Adrian and falling in straight sets to Judson. CU has already eclipsed their win total from their first year as a program in 2021, as they sit at 3-1 on the year. Cornerstone remains home on Wednesday as they take on Trinity Christian at 7 p.m. inside Mol Arena.

Game One – Cornerstone – 3 Adrian – 2 (20-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 15-16)
  • Adrian took an early set one lead after a 3-0 run made it 11-7 as Cornerstone was struggling to put the ball in play.
  • Cornerstone responded with a 4-0 run that tied things at 14 with a pair of Patrick Voloch services aces.
  • Jacob Brinks later recorded a kill that gave CU a 16-14 edge.
  • The Bulldogs ended set one on a 9-3 run though, and took the set 25-20 on an attack error by Hubert Sliwinski. Cornerstone tallied seven attack errors in set one.
  • CU found their groove in set two scoring five straight points to get it started, highlighted by a block from David Galanes and Joshua Beaumont
  • Back-to-back kills from Huber Sliwinski and Jacob Brinks increased the set two advantage to 12-4.
  • Cornerstone never relinquished the lead, hitting .294 as a team, as David Galanes finished it off with a kill to take set two 25-18.
  • Similar to how CU responded in set two, Adrian did the same in set three, going on an 8-2 run to start things.
  • Cornerstone responded with a 9-0 run on the David Galanes serve to go up 11-8.
  • Hubert Sliwinski recorded a kill to give CU a 20-17 edge.
  • Adrian responded with a 6-0 run and would take set three 25-23 to put the Golden Eagles in a 2-1 hole.
  • Neither team could garnish a big lead in set four, as Brunno Peres recorded a kill that tied things at 15.
  • Brunno Peres stayed hot down the stretch as CU was resilient and earned a 25-23 set four victory hitting a match best .394 with 15 kills and just two errors in the set.
  • After giving up the first two points in set five, Cornerstone took over scoring nine straight, with two Patrick Voloch service aces.
  • Max Hernandez finished the Bulldogs off with a kill to win set five 15-6 and improve CU's record to 3-0 on the year.

Game Two – Cornerstone – 0 Judson – 3 (18-25, 23-25, 25-27)
  • Judson went on a 4-0 mid first set that gave them control, using a big block to go on top 14-9.
  • Hubert Sliwinski capped off a Golden Eagle 3-0 run with a solo block of his own, but it was too-little-too-late as Cornerstone fell 25-18 in set one.
  • Judson continued to maintain momentum, scoring the first four points of set two with a pair of kills and a service ace.
  • Brunno Peres recorded a big kill that cut the Eagle deficit to three at 12-9.
  • Again, Judson started to pull away but a Hubert Sliwinski service ace brought CU within one at 20-19.
  • Cornerstone again could just not gain the lead, as Judson's Elijah Wrobel recorded a kill to take set two 25-23.
  • Brunno Peres recorded two early kills in set three that sparked Cornerstone to a 6-2 edge.
  • A David Galanes attack error allowed Judson to tie things up at seven all.
  • Cornerstone used a 4-0 run to regain the lead at 19-17 with a block from Hubert Sliwinski and David Galanes as well as a kill from Slwinski.
  • Joshua Beaumont recorded a block that kept the CU lead at two, 23-21.
  • Judson scored six of the last eight points though and swept the Golden Eagles with a 27-25 set three victory.
