GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles suffered a tough loss as they fell to the Trinity Trolls 3-1. Cornerstone fought hard in the first set, winning 25-22 on a kill by
Cade Meza, but unfortunately couldn't hold on as the Trolls took the next three sets to down the Golden Eagles. CU is now 3-2 on the year as they look forward to a busy weekend, hosting Mount Vernon Nazarene at 11 a.m. and Calumet College of St. Joseph at 3 p.m.
Cornerstone – 1 Trinity Christian – 3 (25-22, 18-25, 23-25, 17-25)
- The Golden Eagles first point of the game came on a David Galanes kill assisted by Max Hernandez.
- The Trolls responded by getting 4 points out of the next 5 serves to put them up 4-2.
- But the Golden Eagles didn't back down, winning the next 4 points to put them back up to 6-4 early in the first set.
- Late into the first set, the Trolls gained 5 points with 3 kills to put them ahead 20-19.
- After a timeout called by CU, the Golden Eagles gained momentum after a kill by Max Hernandez, which tied the game 20-20.
- On a huge kill by Cade Meza, the CU Golden Eagles put away the first set, winning 25-22.
- Cornerstone was off to a rough start in the second set as the Trinity Trolls came out swinging with a group of kills, which put them up 4-1 early.
- This was followed by another run of 4 kills from the Trolls, three from Adam Becker, giving them a comfortable lead 8-2.
- Cornerstone, on a kill by Brunno Peres, was able to close the gap slightly late in the second set, making the game 19-15 Trolls favor.
- Cornerstone would never take the lead in set two though as TCC used a series of service errors to pull away and take the set 25-18.
- The Golden Eagles started out strong in the third set with a couple of service aces and attack errors from the Trolls, taking an early lead of 6-2.
- CU managed to hold that lead for a long time, due to many errors by the Trolls' side.
- Unfortunately, Cornerstone could not keep up as TCC came back with multiple runs of 3 points to win the set on a kill by Jake Ostema from setter Ryan Schmidt with the third set ending 25-23 Trinity.
- Cornerstone took the first point in the fourth set on a kill by David Galanes.
- After a run of four points, the Trolls found themselves on top as they take the lead 6-4 early in the set.
- The Golden Eagles seemed to have gained some confidence as they put 5 more points away to tie the set 10-10, with kills by David Galanes and a service ace by Patrick Voloch.
- Trinity wasn't over yet as they 3 separate runs of 3 points to put them almost out of reach as they led the set 19-13.
- The crowd held their breath as they watched the Trolls and Golden Eagles battle it out in a very long rally which, unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, ended in a kill by the Trolls.
- The Golden Eagles suffered a disheartening defeat as the Trolls took the fourth set, winning 25-17.
