Joshua Beaumont WHAC Player of the Week
Freshman middle-hitter
Joshua Beaumont highlighted the week earning the program's first ever WHAC athletic weekly honor as he was named the WHAC Defender of the Week after 18 blocks through four games. Beaumont had four solo blocks and 14 assisted blocks to help the Golden Eagles to a 3-1 start.
David Galanes Attack
Freshman
David Galanes spent much of the fall injured, but in his debut with Cornerstone he was a standout offensively. In the team's first year in 2021,
Cade Meza led all players with 131 kills on 451 attempts. Galanes through just four matches is already 40% of the way to the program record as he tallied 53 on 133 attempts in the MMVI to lead the team. Galanes had double-digit kills in every contest with a single game program record of 16 against Adrian.
Scouting Trinity Christian
Trinity Christian will open their season at the ONU Quad match tonight before coming to Cornerstone tomorrow for their third match of the year. TCC is in their third year as an NAIA program and they went a promising 15-5 last year as their season ended in a five-set upset loss to St. Ambrose in the CCAC tournament. The Trolls have a small roster of just 11 athletes with eight of those players being freshmen or sophomores. Three of the top four Troll kill leaders from 2021 are no longer with the program as senior middle Jake Ostema returns looking to lead the program to another year of success.
Scouting Mount Vernon Nazarene
Just like Cornerstone, MVNU played their first full season in program history last year as they went 9-10 overall and 4-8 WHAC. The Cougars had a team in 2020 but the season was cut short due to COVID. In 2022, Mount Vernon has gone 0-2 with losses to two tough opponents in Limestone College and (14) Campbellsville during the NAIA/NCAA Crossover Challenge. The benefit for the young program is all four of their kill leaders from last season return in 2022, as well as their starting libero and setter.
Scouting Calumet – St. Joseph
Calumet – St. Joseph has joined as one of the new programs to one of the fastest growing sports in the NAIA this year as they will compete in the Chicagolands Collegiate Athletic Conference for the first time. As with every new team. Calumet will have some growing pains with just eight players listed on their roster. The team has yet to play their program opener, as their Crossroads Crossover tournament was canceled this past weekend. CCSJ is scheduled to play Olivet College out of NCAA DIII before coming to Cornerstone on Friday, January 21 for their first contest.
