GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Despite a tough battle all throughout the day, Cornerstone saw themselves on the losing end of two matches, getting swept in the WHAC opener by Mount Vernon Nazarene and swept by Calumet College of Saint Joseph in the second match of the day. The Golden Eagles have now lost four straight to drop to 3-4, 0-1 WHAC on the year as they hit the road for the first time on Wednesday for another WHAC test at receiving votes Siena Heights.
Game One – Mount Vernon Nazarene – 3 Cornerstone – 0 (25-17, 25-23, 24-26)
- An early 6-0 run by Mount Vernon Nazarene put the Golden Eagles in a six-point hole in set one, using two blocks to go on top 8-2.
- Cornerstone responded with a 6-0 run of their own to cut the deficit to 14-12 behind a pair of kills from David Galanes.
- Cornerstone kept the deficit within two until an MVNU four-point run capped off by a Spencer Stanley kill put them on top 20-14.
- A Golden Eagle attack error would end set one in favor of the Cougars, 25-17.
- In set two, neither team could gain a lead larger than two points in the early going, as an MVNU attack error tied things at eight.
- Landon Ewers service ace put Mount Vernon on top 18-14.
- David Galanes again went on the attack and cut the Golden Eagle deficit back to two with a kill to make it 20-18.
- A Brunno Peres kill later got CU within one, 23-22.
- Mount Vernon did not allow Cornerstone to complete the comeback however, as Landon Ewers recorded a block on set point to give the Cougars a 25-23 set two victory.
- Cornerstone brought the energy to begin set three as Jacob Brinks and Patrick Voloch each recorded kills to go on top 10-5.
- Mount Vernon then chipped away to cut it back to one, again using the block to highlight the action with Caden Donaldson and Luke Funte combining to make it 11-10 CU.
- Cornerstone went on another surge, using a kill and service ace from Brunno Peres to go on top 16-12.
- After a timeout trailing 18-14, MVNU scored five straight points to regain the lead 19-18.
- Cornerstone earned set point on a Cougar attack error at 24-22, but Mount Vernon scored the final four points of the match after another timeout to win set three 26-24 and take the match 26-24.
Game Two – Calumet – St. Joe – 3 Cornerstone – 0 (25-16, 26-24, 28-26)
- Calumet, a new program, took on Cornerstone after falling in straight sets to Mount Vernon, playing with a resilient group, but just six players.
- Neither team could gain an early lead, as a one-handed block from CCSJ's Steven Gutierrez tied the set at four, and a kill from Cornerstone's Jacob Brinks tied things at seven.
- Calumet got out to their largest lead of 17-12 after a 4-0 run that saw three kills and forced the Golden Eagles into a timeout.
- After the timeout, the Crimson Wave continued their run to take set one, 25-16.
- Calumet started set two hot as well, scoring the first four points before Brunno Peres found the floor to give CU their first point.
- Back-to-back aces by David Galanes helped CU cut the deficit to three.
- A big block from Joshua Beaumont and David Galanes forced Calumet into a timeout as the Golden Eagles trailed 14-12.
- Alex Hekman kept the momentum for CU going after the timeout with a huge dig that put CU within one.
- Cornerstone battled back despite some communication errors to take a 24-23 lead. CCSJ continued to battle though and responded with three straight points to take set two, 26-24.
- In set three, the two teams sat tied eight times through the first 16 points.
- Calumet was the first team to garnish a two-point edge with a kill from Thomas Garbutt to lead 10-8, but Cornerstone responded with four straight points including two kills from Cade Meza to go on top 12-10 before an injury timeout.
- A service ace from Cade Meza put Cornerstone up 16-13 and forced Calumet into their first timeout.
- Again, the resilient Crimson Wave refused to give in using a 5-1 run to regain the lead 21-20.
- The two teams battled down the stretch but Cornerstone could not pull it out, falling 28-26 in set three to fall 3-0.
By the Numbers
45 – Cornerstone suffered 45 attack errors on the day with 21 in match one and 24 in match two.
30 –
David Galanes led the way with 30 kills, recording 15 in each match.
36 –
Patrick Voloch recorded a career high 36 assists in the second match of the day.
What's Next?
The Golden Eagles hit the road for the first time this year on Wednesday as they travel to Siena Heights for a WHAC matchup that will begin at 7 p.m.
