GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - After falling big to number 17 Indiana Tech last week in the lone game, Cornerstone returns home for the first time since December 11 to take on Concordia and Siena Heights this week. CU last week, played the toughest team in the WHAC and shot a season low and scored a season low 36 points in the road loss. The Golden Eagles have 10 games remaining with seven of those taking place at home. The week begins vs. Concordia on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and will end with Siena Heights on Saturday at 1 p.m. To view this week's games visit the links HERE.
Yonkers to 100
Head Coach Jessica Yonkers in year four is continuing to work toward building her style of play on the court, but her game at Indiana Tech served as her 100th career game coached at CU and at the collegiate level. The young CU program looks to pick up the win count as they enter the one-hundred + games coached under Jessica Yonkers as she is 15-85 in her first 100.
Monday Reschedule
A reminder that a week from today, Cornerstone will play a rescheduled game at Madonna that was postponed due to Crusader COVID-19 issues. That game will take place at 5 p.m. Game notes will not be available for that contest due to the rescheduled date.
Pick Pocket Helderop
Kennedy Helderop has been outstanding at picking opponents pockets this year, leading the team with 44 steals through 18 games. In the last seven contests, Helderop has three or more steals with a career high six against Lourdes on 12/11.
Scouting Concordia
The young Concordia Cardinals were expected to take a bit of a dip in the 2021-22 year, but after a slow start the team has really hit their stride, winning five of their last six games. CUAA is right in the mix in the WHAC standings as they sit fourth overall with a 9-4 conference record and 12-9 overall. Some of the items Concordia has been great at this year is getting to the free throw line and outrebounding their opponents. CUAA averages nearly 21 free throw attempts per game to rank 37th in the NAIA and they out rebound their opponent by 9.8 boards per game to rank 17th best in the country. Sophomore Alize Tripp leads the team with 14.7 PPG and 2.9 APG. In the first meeting of the year, Concordia beat Cornerstone 74-64 behind 27 made free throws.
Scouting Siena Heights
Siena Heights has been dominant all year, posting a 17-5, 9-3 WHAC record to rank second in the conference as it stands today. The Saints are suffocating on defense holding opponents to an NAIA ninth best 53.4 PPG and an NAIA second best 22.5% from behind the arc. The SHU offense is powered by senior Peyton Banks who is averaging 19.7 PPG on a 51.5% clip. She also leads the team with 10.2 RPG to average a double-double. Siena Heights got the best of Cornerstone earlier this year, winning 85-62 in Adrian, as the Saints have now won all six matchups against CU Head Coach Jessica Yonkers.
