SYLVANIA, Ohio – Cornerstone got back in the win column with a 1-1 day at the Lourdes tri-meet, falling to (5) Lourdes in straight sets to start the day, before defeating Rio Grande in straight sets to finish the day. CU ends a six-game losing streak to get back in the win column and improve to 4-6 on the year. The Golden Eagles return home next week as they host two WHAC matches vs. Aquinas on Monday and Indiana Tech on Friday.
Game One – (5) Lourdes – 3 Cornerstone – 0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-15)
- Early kills from Max Hernandez, Jacob Brinks, and Hubert Sliwinski helped Cornerstone hang around in set one with the toughest team they have seen all year as they sat tied 6-6.
- Lourdes pulled away using a 10-1 run to go on top 16-7.
- CU responded with a 7-2 run to cut the deficit back to as low as four, highlighted by two kills from Brunno Peres.
- Jacob Brinks recorded a kill to make it 23-18, but the Gray Wolves scored the final two points to win set one 25-18.
- Errors cost Cornerstone early in set two with a bad set and two attack errors to fall behind 5-1.
- Jacob Brinks recorded a kill that brought CU back within two at 7-5.
- Lourdes responded with a 5-0 run to double-up the Golden Eagles.
- Back-to-back blocks from Brunno Peres/Hubert Sliwinski and Hubert Sliwinski/Jacob Brinks helped Cornerstone to keep set two alive, trailing 22-16.
- A David Galanes attack error ended set two in favor of Lourdes, 25-17. CU hit -.034 on the set.
- Lourdes again found an early run in set three, scoring six straight points on the Jeff Lam serve to go on top 11-4.
- Brunno Peres earned an ace and a kill to highlight a 3-0 run that brought Cornerstone back within five.
- Lourdes cruised to victory in set three as another Golden Eagle attack error ended the match with a 25-15 set three loss.
Game Two – Cornerstone – 3 Rio Grande – 0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-19)
- The Golden Eagles handled the first-year program Rio Grande in straight sets to end a six-match losing skid.
- In set one, Cornerstone fell behind 11-8, but responded to tie things at 11 with a big block from Joshua Beaumont.
- A service ace from Britt Parkinson put Cornerstone on top 17-16.
- CU then went on a 5-1 run to take control of set one, using a kill and service ace from David Galanes to win 25-22.
- Set two was dominated by the Golden Eagles, going on an 8-1 run to open things that saw a pair of big kills from Max Hernandez.
- Kills from Hubert Sliwinski and David Galanes increased the CU lead to 15-4.
- Cornerstone hit .500 in set two with just two attack errors and cruised to a 25-13 victory.
- Max Hernandez continued his offensive spurt into set three, using a kill to spark a 3-0 run that put CU on top 7-3.
- The two teams traded points for the majority of the remaining set, as multiple attack and service errors from Rio Grande helped Cornerstone to a 25-19 victory and 3-0 match sweep. Cornerstone sweeps a team for the first time this year and moves to 4-6 overall.

.351 – Cornerstone hit a season best .351 in the win over Rio Grande.
2 – CU split time at setter again as
Patrick Voloch recorded 28 assists on the day, and
Max Hernandez recorded 22.

David Galanes led the team with 13 kills with a team high six at Lourdes and tied for a team high with seven vs. Rio Grande.
What's Next?
Cornerstone continues the busy start to the year with two WHAC contests next week as they host Aquinas on Monday, January 31 and Indiana Tech on Friday, February 4. Both games are set to start at 7 p.m.
