Men's Volleyball Falls Just Short Against Aquinas in Five-Setter

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  –  It was a back-and-forth affair in Mol Arena as the Cornerstone fell just short in their match against rival Aquinas 3-2. Cornerstone took the first and third sets, while AQ took the rest in the contest. Statistically, Aquinas had better numbers, but Cornerstone kept things interesting with grit and pivotal kills to capitalize on AQ errors. However, the Saints offensive firepower proved to be too much as Julian Armendano was a force with 26 kills in the match. This loss drops CU to 4-7 overall, 0-4 in the WHAC.

Cornerstone – 2 | Aquinas – 3 (25-20, 22-25, 27-25, 19-25, 11-15)
  • Cornerstone got off to a quick start, helped by a Max Hernandez service ace to give the Golden Eagles an early 7-3 lead.
  • Up 13-8, Patrick Voloch kept CU clicking with a kill and service ace in back-to-back points to give the Golden Eagles a 15-8 lead.
  • Aquinas made a small comeback midway through the first set, but Max Hernandez stopped that with a kill to give CU a 17-13 lead.
  • Aquinas got within one point, down 21-20, before Cornerstone took the next four points to win the set 25-20 capped by a Patrick Voloch ace.
  • The Saints and Golden Eagles went back-and-forth throughout the second set. Joshua Beaumont and Max Hernandez led the Golden Eagles but found themselves down15-12 midway through the second set.
  • CU would make it close after a Brunno Peres kill to pull within one of Aquinas 17-16, but it was all AQ after that as they took the second set 25-22 to even up the sets.
  • Another set, more even play for the Golden Eagles and Saints as they traded points throughout the entire third set.
  • Tied at 19 late in the third, Joshua Beaumont got the crowd on their feet with a huge kill to give CU a one-point advantage.
  • The AQ took a few points, eventually getting a set point at 24-22, but Cornerstone did not back down as they fought their way back to win the third set 27-25 on a Hubert Sliwinski kill that made Mol Arena erupt in raucous cheers.
  • The fourth set started with some flair as both teams traded points on multiple kills and strong defense. Max Hernandez would help even things up midway through the fourth set with a kill to make the score 12-12.
  • Cornerstone kept things close after a Joshua Beaumont kill tied the game up again 18-18, but that was the closest CU would come to AQ in the fourth set as the Saints pulled off a set win 25-19 to even the match at two sets apiece.
  • Down 2-0 early in the fifth set, Max Hernandez would not be denied as he had back-to-back kills to even up the set.
  • Down 7-5, Jacob Brinks kept the Golden Eagles alive with a big kill to cut the AQ lead to one.
  • Cornerstone would not get closer than that as Aquinas pulled away to win the fifth set 15-11 behind strong attacks, winning the match 3-2.
