Crazy Cap to 2021
The Golden Eagles ended 2021 in a fitting way with two crazy contests. The week opened at Grace Christian where Cornerstone recorded season high's in five statistical categories including a season best 103 points in a blowout 103-65 road victory. CU then traveled to (7) Grace College in Indiana and fell in two overtimes at the Lancers with both teams recorded 50+ rebounds in a game that was dominated in the post. Cornerstone is 11-6 on the year now as they will have 13 games remaining in 2022 with all of them as WHAC contests.
Dominating the Boards
Cornerstone had 50+ rebounds in each game this week, with a season high 52 at Grace Christian on Tuesday evening. Of those 52 boards, 24 game on the offensive glass with 18 of the 24 in the first half. Cornerstone last recorded 24+ offensive boards in November of 2008 against Kuyper College when they tallied 27. The team game record for rebounds in a single contest comes from well before Head Coach Kim Elders time at CU with 67 against Fort Wayne Bible College back in February of 1972.
Ainsworth WHAC Player of the Week
For the first time in his career, junior center Cory Ainsworth earned the WHAC Player of the Week award after his career high 30 point performance at Grace College of Indiana. Ainsworth continues to improve every year as he has three double-doubles in his last seven contests after not recording a double-double in each of his first two seasons. Ainsworth is second on the team with 15.3 PPG and 6.6 RPG.
Record in Multiple Overtimes
There are very few things that Hall of Fame Head Coach Kim Elders has not achieved in his 29 year career, but one of those items has been CU has never won a multiple overtime game in his reign. After this week's double OT loss at Grace, Coach E is now 0-6 in double OT games and 0-1 in triple OT games. He holds a 9-10 overall record in single OT games.
Scouting Madonna
The Crusaders are the only team to have a multi-game active win streak against Head Coach Kim Elders and the CU program winning the last five straight contests. On the year, Madonna is 10-7, 4-3 WHAC as they last lost by 20 in a non-conference game to Roosevelt. MU is coming off a 2020-21 where they finished second in the WHAC behind the performance of WHAC Player of the Year Henry Speight. Madonna this year is trying to replace that production behind the senior leadership of Mark Mettie and Noah Campbell who each average 11+ PPG.
Scouting UNOH
Last time the Golden Eagles went to UNOH they recorded a program record 21 made three's in a dominant 102-73 victory. The Racers are coming off some COVID issues as they have not played since December 21 and they hold a 6-10, 3-4 WHAC record. The team has seven seniors and although they only average 64.9 PPG as a team, they are outstanding defensively holding opponents to 71.6 a game. Offensively, UNOH is led by a freshman in Biggz Johnson who averages 13.8 PPG this year.
