Men’s Soccer falls 3-0 at home to rival Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After a long day of rain, Cornerstone took the field against their rival Aquinas and fell 3-0 on the soft grass. CU could not maintain possession as the Saints scored one in the first half and two in the second to earn the victory and take the series lead at 34-33-7 all-time. Cornerstone falls to 5-4-4 on the year and 2-3-1 in WHAC play as they get set for another tough home match on Saturday against (13) Northwestern Ohio at 5 p.m.

The Highlights:
  • Tyler Corstange got the game off to a solid start with an open look shot that was saved in the second minute for a strong early surge.
  • After the first two minutes however, Aquinas took control limiting the Golden Eagles possession and recording three shots in the first 15 minutes.
  • AQ found the net with a shot outside the 18-yard box from Jai Tahlan that had keeper Ethan Pike leaning the wrong way as it was able to find the net to make it 1-0.
  • CU had no answer in the first half, trailing 1-0 at the break.
  • A great ball in the 55th minute from Liam Travers allowed Mason Sills, the Saints leading goal scorer, to add to his tally as he finished the ball on the back post to give an insurance goal.
  • Cornerstone went heavy in the reserves looking for any offensive answer as they subbed five players at once in the 70th minute with Boston Knapp, Christian Galloway, and Jeff Herrema all returning to the pitch after starting, while Chana Batan and Ben Wolf saw action.
  • The game began to get more physical as AQ tried to slow the pace down and hold on to the 2-0 lead. Three yellow cards were handed out, all in the second half.
  • Sloppy defense by the Golden Eagles allowed the Saints to record a third goal in the 77th minute as CU tried to usher the ball out of bounds but it was stolen for an easy cross and goal inside the six-yard box.
  • Cornerstone could not respond despite garnishing a little more possession in the final 15 minutes as they fell 3-0 on a cold rainy evening vs. Aquinas.
