GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Not a single player on the Golden Eagles roster was alive the last time they won 23 or more matches consecutively, as a 3-0 sweep over rival Aquinas tonight achieves their longest win streak since 1999. CU earned a 25-22, 25-18, 25-23 straight set victory over the Saints for their seventh in a row against them as they move to 23-3 and a perfect 14-0 in WHAC play. CU has two more games this weekend as they look to tie the 199 team's program longest win streak of 25 with home matches vs. UNOH and Indiana Tech.
Game Recap: #22 Cornerstone – 3 Aquinas – 0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-23)
- Aquinas came out fighting early in set one, using a 4-0 run to go on top 7-5.
- Cornerstone responded nicely after the two teams traded points for a while, scoring three straight on a kill from Aubrey Lenz, an AQ ball handling error, and a kill from Kylie Barron to go up 17-14.
- Abbi Perkins of the Saints recorded a kill to tie set one at 20.
- CU closed set one strong though, taking five of the last seven points to take set one 25-22. Olivia Keelean recorded two kills in those five points to lead the team.
- Set two was the most dominant performance by the Golden Eagles as they got out on top 7-4 on a Kylie Barron kill.
- Aquinas came back to take a lead, but it would not last long as Cornerstone went on a 5-1 run to go on top 18-14. Kylie Barron and Kathryn Detweiler combined for a huge block in the run.
- AQ called timeout to try and stifle the Golden Eagles, but it did not work as Aubrey Lenz recorded a dump kill on the pass from Patsy Morris to take set two, 25-18.
- The Saints tried a new setter to start set three. The plan did not work accordingly however, as she had two ball-handling errors in the first three points to put CU on top 3-0.
- Two more kills from Olivia Keelean and an Emma Whitley service ace put Cornerstone on top 7-2.
- Aquinas rallied with a 5-0 run that saw a pair of Jordyn Carlyle aces to tie set three at 12.
- After CU went back on top, Aquinas took a big few points to lead 21-19 and force Cornerstone into a timeout.
- CU was on the ropes down 23-21, but the Rylie Walters serve and the Kaylee Dykema attack were too good in crunch time recording two service aces and two kills to earn the final four points and take set three 25-23.
