Ainsworth powers Men’s Basketball to win in WHAC/CL Finale at Spring Arbor

SPRING ARBOR, Mich.  – Cory Ainsworth dominated in the post with a career high 33 points on 15-18 shooting to power Cornerstone to their first win of the season and a split at the WHAC/Crossroads League Classic. CU rebounded nicely after a close loss to (5) Indiana Wesleyan, taking down the host Spring Arbor 77-61 to move to 1-1 on the year. The Golden Eagles shot over 50% from the field and were dominant from start to finish as they now have a week off before continuing the road trip at Olivet Nazarene next Saturday at 3 p.m. 

Game Flow
-        The game opened with the two sides trading threes as Eli White hit one for SAU before Trent Summerfield responded with one of his own. 
-        Cory Ainsworth's post play showed up early, scoring eight of the Golden Eagles first 18 points as they doubled-up the Cougars 18-9 with 10:15 to play in the first half. 
-        Three more points from Cory Ainsworth put CU on top by 12 at 21-9, ending a 10-0 run. 
-        The CU defense held Spring Arbor to 16 points at 15% from the field in the first half as they led 34-16 at the intermission. 
-        Eli Steffen hit an early bucket in the second half to put Cornerstone up 20, 38-18. 
-        The offense continued to flow as Luke Rowlinson hit a three to increase the lead to the largest on the day of 24 with 14:31 to play. 
-        Cornerstone continued to go to Cory Ainsworth all the way to the final buzzer as he scored his final points on a layup with 2:01 to play that gave CU the 74-55 lead. 
-        Freshman Lewis Jones along with a few others saw time in the late minutes as he hit a three for the final bucket for the Golden Eagles as they went on to win 77-61 over the WHAC/CL Classic host Spring Arbor. 
 
By the Numbers 
33/13 – Cory Ainsworth recorded his first double-double of the year with 33 points and 13 rebounds. 33 points serve as a career high, and 13 boards tie a career high for the senior. 
4 – Carter Nyp and Eli Steffen each recorded four assists to tie for the team lead.
51.6% - Cornerstone shot 51.6% from the field on 32-62 shooting.

Cornerstone is off for a week before they continue their season opening road stent at Olivet Nazarene on Saturday, November 5 at 3 p.m.
