GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Redshirt-senior
Carter Nyp powered the Golden Eagles with a career high 37 points, going on a crucial 10-0 run on his own to help CU edge out Madonna in the first annual Pack the House event, 94-92.
Luke Rowlinson added 22 of his own in the win to tie his career high, as Cornerstone moves to 5-1, 3-0 WHAC on the year. Cornerstone has now won their home opener and will stay home this weekend with a 6 p.m. contest with Lourdes on Saturday.
Game Flow
- Madonna got off to a great start in a hostile environment, scoring the first seven points with it starting on a three from Ethan Emerzain.
- Carter Nyp hit a three for CU at the 17:10 mark of the first half, for the Golden Eagles first field goal to cut the deficit to three at 10-7.
- Cory Ainsworth hit a few layups while Carter Nyp drained another three to keep the game close at 20-16.
- The offense would go stagnant for the next two minutes before Connor Dykema hit a reverse layup that brough CU within two, 20-18.
- A Luke Rowlinson driving layup would tie the game for the first time at 23.
- Cornerstone was finally able to take their first lead on a Carter Nyp layup that made it 32-30. Despite Madonna hitting a three to immediately take the lead back, a big and one from Cory Ainsworth and a pair of threes from Luke Rowlinson put CU on top 40-33.
- The Golden Eagle scoring run would balloon to 14-0 with the three-ball falling for everyone as Carter Nyp added a pair.
- Connor Dykema brought great energy off the bench with two huge offensive rebounds and a charge taken to end the half with CU leading 46-37.
- The inside out game with Cory Ainsworth and Luke Rowlinson helped Cornerstone keep a nine-point edge early in the second half, as Rowlinson hit is fourth three of the game bringing the score to 51-42.
- Madonna would respond with a 6-0 run capped off by a layup from Geordon Duncan that put the Crusaders within five, 53-48.
- Carter Nyp had an answer for every Madonna run, hitting another three at the 12:39 remaining mark to put CU back on top by nine, 62-53. Head Coach Kim Elders used his first timeout after the bucket.
- Henry Speight led the Crusaders back to within two with eight consecutive Madonna points.
- Madonna would do the work on the defensive end, recording a few steals to regain the lead for the first time in the second half. Matthew Maclellan and a Devin Dunn each hit a layup to go on top 73-70 with 7:10 to play.
- A pair of Brendan Young free throws would increase the MU lead to 78-73.
- A 7-0 run from Carter Nyp and Luke Rowlinson gave CU the lead right back, 80-78.
- Carter Nyp refused to let Madonna hold the lead, scoring eight straight points for the Golden Eagles over a two-minute span to hold a 90-86 edge with 1:53 to play.
- Cornerstone did the job on the defensive end, and Carter Nyp hit his free throws to bring the lead to 92-87 with 53 seconds to play.
- Madonna had a chance to cut into the deficit but was unable to do so with a badly missed three. Cornerstone would hold on for the big home victory, 94-92.

Cornerstone stays home to take on Lourdes at 6 p.m. on Saturday as they will follow the Women's Volleyball National Tournament Opening Round and the Women's Basketball game vs. Lourdes all in Mol Arena.
