GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Freshman
Jaxi Long scored a career high 25, including 15 straight for the Golden Eagles to power them to a 71-64 home victory vs. Concordia on Tuesday evening. Cornerstone is now 5-0 in WHAC play and 5-4 overall on the year. The last time Cornerstone began the year 5-0 in conference play was still the 2008-09 season when they won six in a row. CU now has a big stretch off as they will travel to Indiana Tech after Thanksgiving on November 30.
Game Flow:
- Both offenses got off to a slow start in the first, as Concordia led 4-2 with 6:41 remaining. Mackenzie Stien hit the first CU foeld goal at the 6:41 mark to get the Golden Eagle offense going.
- Concordia doubled-up the CU score 10-5 on a Keirslynn Lawless layup with 3:48 to play, using the inside game to get the early lead.
- Back-to-back threes from Olivia Kubik and a layup from Kaycee Sluiter helped CU tie the game at 13.
- One more Mackenzie Stein field goal tied the score at 15 after the first quarter.
- Again, the defense shined to start the second quarter, as Cornerstone would score just three points in the first two minutes to lead 18-15.
- The game remained close throughout the second quarter. Stephanie Ainsworth got going in the pick and roll though to keep the Golden Eagle three-point lead.
- At the 3:25 mark left in the half, Kennedy Helderop saw some defense lead to offense getting a bucket to put Cornerstone on top by their largest margin of six, 29-23.
- Concordia ended the half on a 7-3 run to cut the Golden Eagle advantage to 32-30.
- The Cardinals started the third quarter on a 4-0 run to go on top 34-32.
- The Jaxi Long show then began mid third quarter as she scored 15 straight points with three threes to put CU on top 51-42.
- CU would get to the free throw line to end the third quarter, as Kennedy Helderop went 1-2 to maintain an eight-point edge going into the final 10 minutes, 54-46.
- The free throw line continued to be a factor as the fourth quarter began with an 8-2 run that gave CU their largest lead of the day at 14. A technical foul on Concordia allowed Cornerstone to shoot four consecutive free throws and increase the lead.
- With 2:42 to play, Izzy Hadly the Concordia freshman would hit a huge and-one bucket to cut the deficit back to five at 63-58.
- Jaxi Long at the free throw line closed the Golden Eagles victory out however hitting four, while Mackenzie Stien hit two to secure the 71-64 victory and move to 5-0 in WHAC play.
