Conference vs. Non-Conference
The Golden Eagles are in search of their first non-conference win of the season as they have dominated the WHAC year but struggled outside the WHAC. CU is 6-1 against conference opponents and 0-4 against anyone outside of the WHAC. It has been over a month since Cornerstone last played a non-conference game as they started the year with an 0-4 record, with three losses to Crossroads League Schools and one loss to a CCAC school. Cornerstone will face their first NCAA opponent of the year in DIII Calvin University on Tuesday, December 20 at 7 p.m. EST for their next test.
WHAC Standings
After being tabbed ninth in the WHAC Preseason Poll, Cornerstone finds themselves in second with just three games remaining in the first go around through the conference at 6-1. CU has yet to play Rochester, Aquinas, and Lawrence Tech this season as only one of those three teams have a winning record as it stands.
Beating a Ranked/RV Team
Cornerstone has defeated an NAIA Top 25/RV team for the first time under the direction of Head Coach
Jessica Yonkers last time out, taking down receiving votes Siena Heights 89-80. CU last defeated a Top 25/RV team in their miraculous WHAC Tournament run in 2018 with a road victory over (9) Indiana Tech in the tournament final.
Mackenzie Stien was the hero last time out with 24 points and seven rebounds in the win.
WHAC Player of the Week
Junior
Mackenzie Stien earned WHAC Player of the Week for the second time in her career after her 24 point and seven rebound performance vs. Siena Heights. Stien is the only player in the last four years to earn the award as she went a dominant 9-11 from the field and averages a team third best 10.1 points per game this season.
Scouting Calvin
Cornerstone and Calvin have a short but solid rivalry as the two teams last met in 2017-18 and have gone 5-5 all-time against one another. In 2022-23, Calvin has gone 7-2 and 2-2 in MIAA play, doing the exact opposite of the Golden Eagles in dominating non-conference opponents and struggling within conference play. The Knights live in the post behind fifth-year senior Gabby Timmer who stands at 6-3 and leads the team with 20.0 PPG and 11.2 RPG. In the Knights nine games, Timmer has scored in double-figures in all nine and had 10+ rebounds in seven of them. The glaring weakness of Calvin is their ability to shoot the ball outside the arc, as they are shooting only 28.7%, while Cornerstone is shooting 36.2% The two teams will meet for the first time under the direction of
Jessica Yonkers with opposite styles of play clashing inside the Spoelhof Fieldhouse on Tuesday evening.
