DEERFIELD, Ill. – Cornerstone women's basketball was back in action after Christmas as they traveled to Illinois to face off against Trinity International University. There was no rust for the Golden Eagles as they would end up beating TIU easily 73-45. It was all Cornerstone from the start as after the first quarter it was 17-3 and they would never look back.
Olivia Kubik led the way for the Golden Eagles scoring 15 as three others had 10 points. Cornerstone is right back in action on Friday as they travel to old rival Davenport for a 1 p.m. tip off.
Game Highlights:
- First Quarter
- Cornerstone got off to a hot start scoring the first ten points of the game with threes made by Maddison Fulks and Jaxi Long as Mackenzie Stein and Stephanie Ainsworth has easy buckets around the rim.
- The defense has ramped up for both teams as Olivia Kubik drains a three to make it 13-1 Cornerstone with four minutes remaining in the first quarter
- Maddison Fulks and Mackenzie Stein make a pair of free throws to close out the first quarter as Cornerstone leads 17-3 after one quarter of play.
- Second Quarter
- Jaxi Long drains a three to make it a 20-5 game with 8:45 remaining in the second quarter.
- Cornerstone used the next two minutes to go on a 6-0 run that extended their lead 26-5 with 6:50 to go in the half. Mackenzie Stein had a nice layup off a pass from Stephanie Ainsworth than Kennedy Helderop had a steal for an easy basket.
- Cornerstone got out to a 32-5 lead before Trinity was able to score their next basket at Skylar Scholten nailed a three for the Golden Eagles.
- Cornerstone finished the half outscoring Trinity 8-7 as they went into halftime with a 40-17 lead.
- Third Quarter
- It was a slow start for both teams as they started the third quarter. Stephanie Ainsworth made a layup to make the Cornerstone lead 46-22 with six minutes remaining in the third quarter.
- Trinity used the next two minutes going on a 9-0 run that shrunk Cornerstones lead to 15, 46-31.
- Oliva Kubik ended the scoring drought for the Golden Eagles making a nice layup.
- Trinity outscored Cornerstone to close out the half 7-5 to make it a 53-37 game after the third quarter.
- Fourth Quarter
- Olivia Kubik has gone on a 5-0 run by herself to start the fourth quarter to extend the Cornerstone lead back up to 21, 58-37 with 9:15 remaining in the third quarter.
- Cornerstone went on a 9-4 run thanks to buckets by Mackenzie Stein and Jaxi Long to make it a 67-41 lead with 5:34 remaining in the fourth quarter.
- Layna Steele ended the Cornerstone scoring drought by draining a three to make it 70-44 with two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
- Cornerstone ended the game strong winning 73-45.
