GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles started the game on a 10-2 run and never looked back as they defeated Madonna 77-63.
Olivia Kubik scored CU's first eight points en route to 16 on the night to lead the Golden Eagles.
Stephanie Ainsworth continued her offensive outburst with 13-point night. Megan Aho did her best to pace the Crusaders as she scored 27 points to lead all scorers. That win moves Cornerstone to 6-21 overall, 4-15 in the WHAC.
Game Flow:
- Olivia Kubik started off the game with a hot hand, hitting two threes in the first two minutes to give the Golden Eagles an early 6-0 lead.
- After a pair of Emma Costen free throws, CU took an 11-point lead, 13-2, with 5:24 left in the first quarter.
- After a few CU buckets, Kennedy Helderop finished the Golden Eagle first quarter scoring with two free throws as they took a 19-15 lead into the first break.
- After a Megan Aho three to bring the Crusaders within one, Ellen Kresge hit a layup to get the Cornerstone scoring going as CU took a 23-20 lead with 6:28 left in the first half.
- Cornerstone had a wild end to the first half as Parrish Hudson completed a three-point play on an and one with eight seconds to go.
- Then, with less than a second to go in the half, Ellen Kresge hit a breakaway jumper from the free throw line, banking it beautifully off the backboard, to beat the buzzer and give the Golden Eagles a 38-29 lead heading into the half.
- Stephanie Ainsworth got off to a hot start in the third quarter, hitting a layup and jumper in back-to-back possessions to give CU a 46-36 lead.
- A couple minutes later, Keeli Lindstrom hit a layup and jumper to keep CU ahead by eight, 52-44.
- Kennedy Helderop finished up the CU scoring in the third quarter, hitting a jumper that helped the Golden Eagles take a 54-48 lead into the final break.
- The Golden Eagles had a great start to the fourth quarter as Olivia Kubik hit a jumper to put CU up 20, 68-48, with 3:58 to play.
- Madonna would not give up as they cut the CU lead to ten with 1:01 remaining.
- However, strong defense and four made free throws in the final minute helped CU finish off Madonna with a 77-63 win.
