MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – The Golden Eagles split their matches, going 1-1 at the tri-meet hosted by Mount Vernon Nazarene. In the opener, Cornerstone fell in a close match 3-2, playing the Cougars much closer today than earlier in the season. In the second match, CU took down Alderson Broaddus in convincing fashion 3-0.
Brunno Peres led the way with 23 combined kills in both matches.
Patrick Voloch had a great day from the setter position, recording 68 assists on the day. The Golden Eagles now move to 7-11 overall.
Mt. Vernon Nazarene – 3 Cornerstone – 2 (25-13, 19-25, 20-25, 25-18, 15-8)
- Hubert Sliwinski got the Golden Eagles on the board early with a kill.
- It was all Cougars the rest of the set as they won nine out of ten points, then went on a 6-0 run before taking the first set 25-13.
- Cornerstone went on a multiple 3-0 runs in the set, getting key kills from Brunno Peres, Max Hernandez, and David Galanes.
- Cornerstone would go on to take the set, following an MVNU attacking error, 25-19.
- Hubert Sliwinski started off the third set hot, registering three kills for CU's first three points of the set.
- The Golden Eagles and Cougars played a tight third set, led by strong defense and Max Hernandez kills as CU took the third set 25-20.
- MVNU got off to a strong start in the fourth set, going on a 4-0 run to go up 12-6 early.
- Despite David Galanes and Hubert Sliwinski's best efforts, they could not tame the Cougars as MVNU took the fourth set 25-18.
- The teams exchanged two point runs before MVNU went on a five-point run midway through the fifth set.
- The Cougars would then go on a 4-0 run to finish off the fifth set and the match 15-8.
Cornerstone – 3 Alderson Broaddus – 0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-23)
- Both team were even to start off the match before Cornerstone went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by three Brunno Peres kills and two Max Hernandez aces, to go up 8-4.
- ABU went on a 4-0 run of their own to even the match at 8-8 before CU went on a 3-0 run to regain the lead.
- Up 18-15, Max Hernandez had a big kill to extend the Golden Eagle lead.
- Alderson Broaddus ended the set with back-to-back errors, leading to a 25-19 set win for CU.
- Cornerstone got off to a hot start, winning the first four points, highlighted by a David Galanes kills.
- Up 15-9, Hubert Sliwinski had a strong kill to advance the CU lead.
- After giving up a 4-0 run to Alderson Broaddus late in the second set, the Golden Eagles took the final three points to win the second set 25-18 on a Max Hernandez kill.
- The third set was even as each team exchanged kills for the first half before Cornerstone went on a 5-0 run to take a 12-11 lead.
- As ABU tried to pull away, David Galanes quelled their run with a kill to cut the Alderson Broaddus lead to 21-17.
- A few points later, CU would win six of the last seven points, capped by a pair of Max Hernandez aces, to win the third set 25-23.
